If the system is out of warranty, it's wise to try a new adapter first.
If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll then have two options: have the jack on the board replaced, if that's possible (cost, between $150-200 with a soldering shop) or if it's not, and the board is damaged, replace the mainboard (cost more on the order of $400-500 depending on whether you do it or have to pay for labor plus the part).
