Inspiron 1520 boot problem
Hi there.
I posted this with the wrong model number, this is now correct.
Can anyone give me some help?
I have an inspiron 1520. When pressing the power button the laptop starts, lights come on, shows a dell screen for about a second, the screen then goes dark, the dvd drive clicks a couple of times, and that seems to be as far as it gets...
It sounds like he processor fan is working, but on pressing the power button again, a couple of seconds pass and then it shuts down. Does this mean that it has not even started loading windows???
I am quite happy to take the machine apart if need be, so any sugestions or possible fixes would be really great.
Many thanks in advance.

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Remove and reinstall both memory modules (one is under the keyboard).
Try powering up again. If it will, install the battery - if that prevents powerup, the battery is bad. If the system won't powerup after the reset described, then the mainboard is likely bad.

I have gone through it again and it has gone back to how it was, dell screen flashes up for a second then nothing. Fan is working and can hear hdd doing something. Is it a mother board fault then??

Quick update..Just by luck, I happened to move the laptop and a lamp shone on the screen and I could see some very faint writing. by shining the lamp on the screen I actually managed to get vista loaded.
Now all I need to know is what to do to get the screen working properly??

If there's an image on an external monitor, replace the inverter (small power board behind the screen). If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the screen - and if that doesn't solve the issue, the mainboard.
