Inspiron 15R 5520
I have recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 lap top. One of the standard features is it has 4 x USB 3.0 ports. I have a printer that produces membership cards for my sports club and I have some issues getting this to work on my new lap top (Windows 8). When I troubleshoot the cause, I am told that this printer will not work on a USB 3.0 and to use a USB 2.0
I don't want to buy a new printer (worth more than the lap top) so do I have any options?

Hi Grayil,
Welcome to Dell Community Forum.
USB 3.0 needs the driver to be installed before it can detect any USB devices in the Operating Sytem. So we request you to follow the steps below and install the relevant drivers from our Support Website.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
Thanks and regards,
Babita S

You can try using a USB 2.0 hub on one of the USB 3.0 ports, but if that doesn't work, you'll need a different system to use with the printer. There's no way to add USB 2.0 ports to the system.

Hi Babita S,
I have just followed your instructions and when I attempted to install the upgrade a messaged appeared that my "system does not meet the minimum requirements to install the software".

Hi Grayil,
Thank you for your reply.
Even though USB 3.0 has new connectors and cables for higher speed data transfer, they are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices and computers hence we request you to try updating the relevant drivers from our Support website.
The link for downloading and installing the relevant USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver located under Chipset is mentioned below:

Please let me know the exact model of your Evolis Badgy Card Printer.
Thanks and regards,

Hi Grayil,
Thank you for your reply.
The link below will take you to the Evolis website from where you may download relevant Windows 8 64-bit compatibledrivers for your Evolis printer, if the same are available.
http://bit.ly/Xe3q2O
The USB 3.0 controller drivers are available only for Windows 7 64-bit and not for Windows 8 64-bit so try updating the Intel (R) 7 Series Chipset drivers. Please select the Operating System correctly prior to downloading and installing the driver.
You can check the following link for the correct order for downloading and installing drivers for your Dell computer.

Hope this resolves the issue.
Please reply if you have any further questions.
Thanks and regards,
Babita S

Hi Babita S,
Unfortunately downloading all the latest software from both Evolis and the sites you had recommended did not correct my issues.
I ended up installing the card printer manually and allocated a "Virtual Port". This at least allowed the PC to recognize the hardware and allow me to print to it.
The Evolis R&D guys are looking into it further as they suggested that they had not come upon this issue before. In the past I have had this printer working, as it was designed, on Windows 7 and XP, both on Dell lap tops.
Sadly this episode has not improved my opinion of Windows 8.
Best regards

Hi Grayil,
Thank you for your reply.
It is unfortunate that you continue to face problems with finding compatible drivers for your Evolis printer.
Device models which were available/introduced in the market prior to Windows 8 launch may not have compatible drivers for Windows 8 readily available.
Since Evolis R&D is working on the issue, I am sure the compatible drivers for your Evolis Printer would be soon available.
Thanks and regards,
Babita S
