Inspiron 1720 - Powering Down Problem

I have had my Inspiron 1720 since January 2008 and have always had a problem shutting down the laptop.  I have tried combinations of everything from just "Shut Down", to "Sleep" then after it powers back up, "Shut Down" to just turning the laptop off when the "Shut Down" mode never stops.  Sometimes when I turn power back on, it goes right to Desktop, but mostly it's the message indicating problem shutting down, so I just start back up by indicating "Start normally."  I can count on one hand the number of times logging off and shut down has worked properly.

I had the need to call support about 3 weeks ago about another issue (resolved) and that was the most frustrating experience ever (high-pitched background noise sounded like hundreds of chirping birds - had to have the tech keep repeating instructions cause couldn't hear).  When I mentioned the above Shut Down problem, they "cleaned out" (my non-tech terminology) the operating system and we reinstalled, hopefully to resolve the shut down issue.  No go.  Any ideas?  Right now, I just work around it, but don't know whether or not it's a good idea to continue in that manner.

do you make sure the computer is off before you close the lid when shutting down? because this puts the computer to sleep before it gets a chance to shut down fully. it "wakes" up and is half way through the shut down sequence.

you can also try updating your video, chipset, and bios drivers from the drivers and downloads section

Amazing how often we suffer from the same problem. I too have the same issue with my 1720, it is quite frustrating. I hope someone has an idea cause I don't know what else to do.

this is an email i got from trend micro when my moms 1525 wasnt shutting down... i dont really like it though because UAC (User Acount Controls) is a good security feature. this kind of leaves your computer wide open. i used the above post, and if that still doesnt work i will try mine.

"Dear Shaun,

This is Diana from Trend Micro Consumer Support.

I have reviewed your case and I understand that you are having problems shutting down your Vista system when Trendmicro Internet Security is installed. Please refer to the steps below to resolve the problem.

Disable UAC:

1. Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu or have it typed in the SEARCH box. Or Windows key + R to open RUN box.
2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAP" (this should probably change to UAC in next Vista beta builds and in the RTM version). Click on that line."
3. Press the Launch button.
4. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
5.Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

Well, I tried the fix that you (and Dell's tech Michael) recommended and it worked!  I have delayed in responding as I wanted to wait for a week or so to be sure it works all the time.  So far, so good. How nice to Shut Down, Sleep and/or Hibernate now without issue.

THANKS!!!!!
