Inspiron 5000 series

Does anyone know what is up with the Inspiron 5100, 5150, and 5160? Why do they release them and then discontinue them so fast? I have a 5150 and it's still top of the line as far as cpu speed and other features.

The motherboard for the 5150 and the 5160 are the same though. All Dell did was change the design of the computer a little bit.

you're sure they're the same?

This is somewhat speculative:

1) the 5100 had a pentium 4 and heat issues -- I'm not sure it would have been reliable at higher core speeds.   furthermore dell is shifting most of their systems (especially those not made for the highest possible performance to P-Ms)

2) the 5150 was a somewhat older form -- I consider the 5160 a slightly revised model.  It may have fixed a few heat issues?  It's motherboard apparently supports higher clock-speeds and cores (not sure?).  That said, the CPU has reached it's end of life -- all non P4 systems are definitely done for, and the 5160 is no exception

That what i've heard from other computer techs. I can't really argue a point either way but I haven't heard anyone say that they were different.

as i said before, i *think* they released it to support newer cores and faster speeds -- it's a small fix/change from the 5150 and was probably cheap to implement/produce.  it's been discontinued because intel (and thus dell) aren't using mobile p4s.  there will be no direct replacement for this line as the CPU type is no longer in production, although I'm sure dell will continue to offer a midline budget system

I just can't figure out why they just released the 5160 about two months ago and now it's discontinued. They don't even have something new to take it's place.

doing some searching it looks like the 5150 has the i852PM chipset while 5160s have i855GME.  furthermore it seems like the physical layout may also be slightly different.

I had the 5000e for 3 years, had the batteries replaced after receiving the recall notice on them. A few months later starting smelling something burning found it to be the laptop. Turned it off. Next day after 30 minutes of using it. The mother board overheated and melted. Burned a hole through the casing.

I have talked to Dell support about this issue. If some still has this series I would call them immidiately for there are several recalls on it concerning batteries and power supply.

I hope this is the right thread for this question:

I know a new 5160 Owner who pulled his "2.8Ghz P4" out of the box and from the FIRST Second it booted up has never run anymore than what seems to be about 233mhz...

I've jacked w/ power options, and power management, and looked @ performance/processor useage...nothing shows...removed many startup items...processes...services...can't find anything unusual happening. He's NOT infected, nor does the machine have any malware or spyware... just very very very slow...

Move to a desktop 2.8Ghz machine right beside it and it FLYS!?!

Please explain WHY this machine will NOT act like it's supposed to?!

Your help is VERY much appreciated...oh...another thing thatmight help

going to my computer properties shows a 2.8Ghz P4 and then UNDER that it said 1.38 and then later after I jacked w/ power management it said 1.8 ghz...it's still SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWER than this insp 8600 running @ 1.6Ghz Mobile...PLEASE help...WHY so slow?

if any of you ever owned a VIA motherboard w/ an athlon chip...you could liken this to installing the chip, booting up and running windows without any of the VIA drivers installed...it worked, but something was very very wrong...and you KNEW it when it first started ;)

Your help is so very much appreciated, again!

This might be something that Dell needs to replace, could be a bad motherboard, could be heating issues.

You could download speedswitch xp and see how fast the processor is really running.

http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html

Another thing that you can try is go into bios and shut off the Speedswitcher function (not sure what it's called) I'll see if I can find that for you.

Also, was the notebook new or refurbished?

Thanks for the info, yes it was the mother board and the whole computer. Like I said. It smelled like it was burning, smoke came out of it and it burned, melted, caught on fire. And yes Dell would replace the computer. Problem is they havent really solved the over heating problem in other models either.

Do you realize that lots of house fires start this way with appliances malfunctions. So if you have a Dell laptop never leave it running when not attended. or you just might find yourself with a house fire.

the "overheating problem" has never too my knowledge caused a fire in a 51x0 or 11x0 model.  we're talking about a huge performance hit, not a safety issue

I'd say talk to Dell. Let them fix it, they'll do it for free if its under warrenty.

Well,

Recently a friend of mine got an Inspiron 5160 2.8Ghz P4 Mobile ( I don't know how it can be both, but it says it is in computer/properties)

another interesting thing to note: on the properties the CPU listed is 2.8Ghz P4 Mobile then UNDER that it says 1.8Ghz...

regardless...of what THAT says, it's THE SINGLE Slowest machine I've seen since a PII 233Mhz machine! I'm not exaggerating.

I liken it to a NEW install of an athlon chip into a motheroboard w/ VIA Chipsets and NOT installing the drivers ;) Remember how SLOW that was? WICKED Slow!

THIS Laptop, OUT OF THE BOX is THAT slow. Something is not right...any ideas?

few more specs built by dell, opened, powered on, NOT JACKED WITH
256mb RAM
30GB HD
WinXP home SP2

interesting to note in device manager that there are TWO processors...what's THAT all about? Does that have ANYTHING to do w/ the problem?

Device Manager bottom half

BEFORE I turned off SPEEDSTEP in BIOS

System Properties

AFTER Turning off SPEEDSTEP in BIOS
NEW System Properties

After jackin' w/ the SPEEDSTEP technology there is ZERO DIfference in system performance...(i.e. MSPaint, DVD Software, Solitaire all open very slowly still)

Has ANYONE experienced this kinda of sluggish performance form an Inspiron 5160? The thing is bran'flippin' NEW!

help... :(
