Inspiron 5100 - ATI 7500 Mobility Radeon Card driver problem

Hello,

I have a problem trying to install the video drivers for my 7500 ATI Mobility Radeon card. I have searched the Forum and not found a question similar to the one that I am posting now: if there is, please excuse my ignorance.

I recently received the Inspiron 5100. I did not want all the additional software  that was installed on the system when I received it: there were things like AOL and other 'nasties'. I reformatted the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Home Edition. Ever since the, I have not been able to install the video drivers for the 7500 video card. I have contacted Dell Tech Support, who have been very helpful so far, but I wanted to post this problem here in case someone may assist.

When I install the video drivers, which installs successfully, and reboot the system, after the 'Welcome' screen comes out, the mouse cursor appears briefly, then dissapears, and the system hangs at this point. I have tried both the official Dell drivers and the Omega drivers: the same situation occurs. Dell support suggested I reinstall the OS: no effect. They then suggested I load all the drivers in order, with the Intel Chipset first. This did not work either. The same error keeps on appearing: the system just hangs there until eventually, after 30 minutes or so, Windows XP finally loads with an error message that says "An error occured while loading. Please save your work and reboot the system". Checking the error message, this points to one of the ATI dll files always: ATIvgasys.dll or something like that.

Any suggestions?

The system:

Inspiron 5100, Pentium 4 2.6ghz, 512kb RAM, Windows XP Home Edition, DVD/CD Burner, Internal 56kb Modem,  15inch SXGA, 64MB DDR 4x AGP ATI Mobility Radeon VIdeo Card, 40BG Ultra ATA Hard Drive, External floppy,

Cafora71,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try booting into safe mode, and then uninstall the ATi drivers from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.  Next, uninstall the video card, and install a standard VGA adapter.  Now, reboot the system.  Now try running the install for the drivers again.

If that fails, then see if you can get the driver files extracted from the installer, then repeat the process, but rather than using the installer, do a manual install, and do not have the wizard find the driver, and point the system directly to the driver and see if it will work.

Hi Rollie,

I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work either. I forgot to explain in my original post that in the Hardware Device Manager I have two devices that have not been installed (and I am unable to find the drivers to install them). They are: 'Ethernet Controller' and 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)'. As a result, I can't install the standard VGA adapter. I am thinking that my problems with my Video drivers are linked somehow to this Video Controller.

Thanking you in anticipation

Hello,

Since we are talking ATI  Radeon Mobility 7500 here I have a couple of questions.

1. Does Dell have a driver newer than v. 7.72 8020528m-4179c, A02 Dated 10-11-2002?

I am looking for some help getting Call of Duty to run on my Inspiron 8100.

2. If not, what is involved changing the 7500 for a 9000? My system is:

    1.2 gig PIII

    512mb pc 100

    30 gig HD

and the above mentioned 7500 vid card

Thanks for the help,

TR

Hey  me again,

Just wanted to let you know I solved the problem.

I installed Cat. 3.9 drivers and it rocks.

I was really leery of installing non Dell drivers but decided to take the leap and they worked.

Thanks for the help, LOL!

Cafora71,

The Video Controller should  be fine, and I have no explanation for why the video driver will not install.  Try removing the listed Video Controller from the Device Manager, and then reboot your system, and run the installer for the ATi driver.

If that does not work, see if you can extract the ATi drivers, and then from the Device Manager try updating the driver for the Video Controller.

Hi again,

I tried the steps as you suggested but unfortunately, this did not work either. I am able to install the drivers, but when I attempt to change the display settings or reboot the OS after installing the driver, I consistently get the following error message:

***STOP: 0x0000008E '0xC000005, 0xBF9E5AC6, 0xEBDD46B4, 0x00000000'

***ati2dvag.dll - Address BF9E5AC6 base at BF9BB000, DateStamp 3efa16db

Beginning dump of physical memory

Even using non-Dell drivers like the Omega ones and non-modded ATI Catalyst drivers (and using the patje tool to mod the driver) does not work either: the message 'INF error, vide driver not found' continues to appear.

Any assistance or thoughts on this will be much appreciated.

Cafora71,

The error message shows that the problem is caused by the video driver.  You need to make sure to uninstall the driver from Add/Remove Programs before reinstalling.  Unfortunately, if that does not work, then it may be Windows corruption, and the Operating System may need to be reinstalled.

Hi,

I am having a very similar problem with my inspiron 4000 / ATI M3 video card. I have tried the following with no success:

Removed driver from device manager and Installed updated driver from dell (would not restart after installation)

Re-Formated hard drive and reinstalled windows ME, then Installed driver (tried both original and updated drivers, would not restart after installation)

Re-Formated hard drive and installed windows XP professional (installed latest driver from dell website, would not restart outside of safe mode.  similar message to what is shown in the other post.)

What else is there to do?  I am starting to think that the actual video card is junk, is this possible?

Thanks, Jay

Jay,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

To test the video card, run the video test from the Dell Diagnostics.

Hello all,

My problem in not being able to install the driver for the Radeom Mobility 7500 card still persists.

I was able to install the driver after I had formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. I used the Catalyst driver 3.9 and used Patje Mod program from driverheaven. Everything worked fine, and I was able to reboot the laptop a couple of times until things went haywire and I received the following message:

"VPU recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands."

At this point, I was able to reboot but was getting strange results: the screen was turning green, fuzzy lines, etc, etc.

Is anyone able to shed any light on the above error?

Thanks guys

My system is:

Try BIOS Updates, Windows Updates, and Direct X updates:  if that don'y work I'de say you have a shot video card: get another one from dell and try and get a different kind of card: also if there is no different card available tell them you got a 5150 and get the geforce fx5200 video card to replace it and have a good chance of succes! Don't resort to the ati 7500 again just incase your compy dont like 7500's if you can!  Good luck, i must say my radeon 7500 has served me well though oit be a diferent form of it in a different model of dell.  Use the warrenty if you can!  Good luck, I'm whell occustomed to compys giving me cr4p...

Hey Rabid_Monkey

Thanks for the post. I have tried all that you have suggested to no avail. I am with you: I think the video card is gone. I have logged a service call with Dell and they have already called me back saying they will arrive tomorrow with a replacement card. I didn't get into too many details as to what kind of card I will get: in the end, as long as it works. I must admit that Dell have been quite helpful so far.

Thanks again.

Cheers

I have had numerouse problems with dell tech support and the have failed to see simeple problems, and not once have they realy helped me,m but just waisted 1/2 an hour of my time:  that';s my experiance!

Anyways:  I'm glad they're sending a replacement: I'm going to include a link to the instructions for installation (dell does have a wonderfull data-base of service manuels!)

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

(here is the main service manuel: just go to emi shield, video card, and palrest section and there you have it)

A peice of advice just be carefull becuase dells have lots of plastric stuff that snaps and pops: don't force anything allot but some things require some force: dells are wobbly thing that bend appart: be carefull

Thanks for the tips Rabid_Monkey. And also thanks for the link to the service manual. This be most handy when the techo is fixing the laptop.

Not knowing your exact situation, it is difficult to generalise: but in my own personal experience, and this relates to any interaction with people, I was always patient and not too demanding when speaking to Dell support. I tried all that they suggested (to no avail): they were always quick to repsond to my emails or phone calls. It was only after exhausting all possible avenues that I suggested that it was time that the techos took over and sorted the situation. Lo and behold, they agreed, and within the hour I had recived a phone call from a techo making an appointment to see me at my work.

We can only wait and see if the problem I have been experiencing is finally rectified.

Cheers, and thanks again.
