Have you gone into the bios setup and made sure the cpu is properly identified and set to run full power?

This might just be ignorance on my part, but when I went to the BIOS menu, there was no options to control the power of the CPU.

Well that sounds good! If this works then you taught me something! Hope it is better for you! Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Well, if replacing the cooling fans worked before then I suppose it could be bad again. But I really cannot see this causing a problem with just this game unless it is a problem with any program you run. Look at the fans and see if they look clean and have no dust all over the fins. Do they seem to run all the time when playing this game? I don't understand the settings you mentioned about running the cpu at half in order to play this game. You mean the game has an option to select this? Usually if one slows a system down for a game it had to be done because a CPU and the computer is too fast for the game. My wife is a huge game player and I have to tell you one should never change a computer setting just to run some game software. But many people do. If software is written properly it will work with your system. But maybe if the game has an option to slow the CPU (I have never seen this) then to avoid the lagging set it back to 100%. Maybe the setting is still at 50%. I have seen games that require you to slow the video card acceleration to 50% or even less. Not a cpu though. Maybe you need to tell us if the cpu runs at 50% all the time for all programs.

Well, I cannot say for sure this is a problem as it may only be using what it needs. If dxdiag says your CPU is the correct one then this part may not be what is drlagging you down. Could be heat or some other issue. I honestly just don't know at this point.

Game works perfect now! Problem solved! Now whenever I want to play a game I"ll just set it to max performance with speedswitch XP, then when I'm done I'll put it back to normal (dynamic switching).

There's something wrong with my speed step if it's not switching up when it's supposed to. Oh well, this will work :)

Thanks for your time and help!!!

Ok, makes more sense. Have you looked on the Dell support site for updated drives for this laptop and especially one for the bios upgrade? I know on some other laptops there was a fan problem with running all the time or never running. You have 2 fans and are they both running? Could be an overheating problem and if so be careful with this as it can cause other damage. What is the laptop sitting on? Is there plenty of air and breathing room under it and behind it? As for the cpu showing running less than it is I am not sure that the fans cause this unless it's a built in safety feature when a system gets hot. Truth is I am about of suggestions. Really makes no sense to me unless there is a patch or fix or a bios upgrade listed under support driver updates from Dell that deals with this problem.

Oh, yes, yes. It says there is a 2.79 GHz CPU. But I just can't select it or change anything about it.

I saw another post on here about game stuttering in the same laptop I have, which is the same problem I'm having. My computer idles at about 53 Celsius...which in my opinion is rather high.

Previously when I first got my laptop, it was fine. However, after awhile when I started playing Doom3 and such, it would lag incredibly. I called Dell, and they replaced my cooling system, then everything worked great. Now I"m having the same problems again.

Could it be something wrong with the cooling system that needs to be replaced again?

The post I read said disabling speedstep and clocking the computer at half. But...I'm already at half, when it's not supposed to be. Then it said something about replacing the cooling paste and removing some plastic part near the fan to increase air flow. But, of course that would void the warranty.

I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?

Oh, and yes, the CPU is ALWAYS running at half (1.6)

Well I agree with you that something is wrong to have to use another program like that. But I am glad you found a way to make it work. But I believe now you can assume the laptop does not have a heat problem and that part is good. By the way, the fans should run often unless there is excessive heat. Glad you fixed it and I wasn't any help!

I Just downloaded speedswitch XP and set it to max performance, and now it's running at 2.79.

So much for Dell not using speed step on my model :|

I'll try the game out now to see if it's any better...and post back in a sec

I have the latest BIOS, A38.

The notebook is sitting on a cooling pad, so it is propped up better than it would be sitting flat on a desk.

It only has one fan.

I think I need to call Dell again. But yes, I have all the latest drivers.

No, not ignorance at all. I don't know the bios setup for this laptop. But I would assume there is a place there that would tell you what cpu is in the system. Just be sure it is the 2.8 and not a 1.6 listed in bios. I believe with my Inspiron 8000 and bios version A23 there is an option to allow the cpu to run at full power even when not needed or set it to use only like a percentage when not needed. But just wanted to make sure that bios says you have a 2.8GHz cpu. Select run and type dxdiag. See what cpu it says you have.

I think I worded that wrong.

No, the game doesn't control the CPU speed. There's nothing I can do that I know of to make it return to the proper speed, which is why I'm here.

It's not just this game that goes slow, it's all games.

Doing a simple task, such as browsing this forum with Firefox, and my CPU temperature jumps in the high 50's. That isn't right. It shouldn't idle that high and be so high when doing simple tasks.

During the game, the fan hardly runs at all. It's on slow all the time, for some odd reason.

With any game, it goes fine for a few seconds, then lags really bad, then goes back to normal, and alternates like this every few seconds.
