Inspiron 6000 OS reinstall issues

Hi,
I have had the misfortune of having a major hard drive failure on my partners inspiron 6000.
New HD installed, and a copy of XP installed also.
From the off, there were things that were not right:
1. No NIC driver
2. No wireless NIC present in the device manager (although there is an unknown device called "Network Controller") yet is is present and enabled in the BIOS

I scoured these forums prior to posting this, and read many threads that are similiar in nature, and since reading those, I have:
1. Installed the Chipset drivers
2. Installed the notebook system software.
3. Installed the Broadcom NIC driver.

I now have the NIC working, which is great. My problem lies with the wireless adaptor, and I am runnning out of patience with the **** thing to be honest. I have tried looking up the system configuration using the service tag, and it doesnt even mention it having a wireless adaptor, even tho it came shipped with one, so no clues there as to what is in there.
I have looked on the driver download page for any drivers that may be of use, and not knowing what is onboard the machine isnt helping. I have downloaded the Intel miniPCI 1350 driver utility anyway, and installed that (that is what is installed on a slightly older machine I have here, and thought it was worth a bash) but again, no result.
So any suggestions you have to stop this machine ending up as a doorstop will be much appreciated, I think I have included all the information I can, but if you need anymore info to help me I will reply asap! I really am getting desperate....

Thanks in advance

J

I had a similar issue with my inspiron 1150.  I was able to get it to work by using windows update...I installed all the latest patches, without the wireless driver that it also detected.  Then after all the major updates were complete, I went back and installed the wireless driver that windows update suggested (under windows update...custom)...hardware and it started working.

The drivers on the CD for my wireless were worthless.

Am trying that now. I have heard of windows updates curing little niggles, but nothing like this. Bu I am willing to try anything. Thanks J

Sorry, I double posted. Weird how that occurred. Anyways, The windows updates had no effect. Is this "network controller" the Wireless NIC, or is it something else? Still getting no further with this. J

I use a freeware program called "System Information for Windows" that tells you what hardware is physically in your pc / laptop.  From there, you might be able to determine what driver, if any, is appropriate.  Also, the dell site itself has something similar, but I don't find it as detailed.  Good luck!

You need to download the network drivers as found here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= First open the compartment on the bottom of your laptop where your wireless card is read the information and find your wireless card from list (most likely the Dell Wireless 1450 WLAN miniPCI Card).
