Inspiron 6000 Power Adapter Problems

Hi,

I have Dell Inspiron 6000, from the last couple of weeks I had this message popped up by quickset "AC Adpater not recognizable....pls connect a Dell 65W adapeter", it would go away if I jiggle with adapter. Then suddenly my laptop started switching from power to battery frequently. The battery wouldnt charge properly also. Now, the ac adpater doesnt power my computer at all.

I have a slightly damaged adapter at the end where its plugged to laptop.Would this be the problem??

I tried a similar HP power adapter with slight variations in power ratings to turn it ON. But still it wouldnt.

I am out of warranty and need to get my lappie running as I have loads of stuff to do.

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It could be the adapter - or the system board. Since the former costs $50 or less, vs. $400+ for the latter, try a new adapter first.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I will try it out.

I would rather consider getting a newer laptop instead of shelling out $400 on this....:smileyhappy:

Hi,

I just tried a  HP adapter DC output of 18.5 V and current of 6.5 A, instead of my dell adpater rated at ( DC: 19.5 V and Current of  3.5 A), It did not work.... is that because there is variations in the rating ?

Can I just clip off and swap the ends of the adapters that goes into the laptop?

Since I have a damaged end on my dell adapter, which when fiddled and kept against wall works. I hope the problem is with the adapter on not on the board.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot.

I would not risk playing with modifying the adapter or with using another system's adapter - you could wind up destroying a $400 board.
