Inspiron 6000 RAM memory upgrade

So, I have an Inspiron 6000 with 1G of RAM. I checked online to determine what kind of memory I needed, and ordered a 1G memory chip. I really should have opened the laptop up and looked, but I didn't.

So, the computer currently has two 512M RAM cards. Can I remove one and install the 1G - then replace the other when I get an additional chip from Dell?

I've tried to search for this info on the forum and in Dell's support docs, but can't find anything.

I would reccomend looking at the manual you got with it or use the service number online.

I appreciate the feedback. I failed to mention that I did look at the manual, and it is VERY BASIC and doesn't even address the various RAM sizes. And, I was on the phone with technical support for over 30 minutes (hold and tech time), and they weren't much help before they disconnected me in error. So, I thought I'd check with the real experts here :)

Go to http://www.crucial.com great site to find out what you have and what you can install. Not bad prices too. We use this company for memory upgs all the time. They haven't failed us yet..

Thanks

Yes. your plan is AOK. Replacing the first 512MB module will defeat the faster Dual-Channel performance, but you will gain something by increasing the overall amount of RAM. When you replace the second module, you will re-gain the Dual-Channel performance. Just make sure you purchase the exact same module for the second replacement to ensure Dual-Channel.

Thanks all for your quick replies. I've replaced the first 512 card with the 1G, and have a second 1G card on order. All is good :)
