Inspiron 6000 - Upgraded memory, will not boot.

I'm at a loss. I upgraded my memory from 512 to 2Gb using 2-Centon 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SODIMM Laptop Memory from Circuit City. When I install either of the modules, it recognizes the memory and starts right up. If I have them both installed it won't start. I get a flashing caps lock symbol and hard drive symbol for about 5 seconds and it powers back down.

If I remove one of the modules and press the power button it will start as normal. If I power back down and add the 2nd module. It will startup fine. BIOS will show 2Gb memory. If I shut it down and try restarting, it won't restart. I get the flashing caps lock and hard drive lights again.

It will start and run fine if I go through the process again. I've tried both modules in different slots and its the same result. I've even tried them both with the 512 I had in there and get the same kinds of results. ie. flahing lights but no startup.

Any ideas? I know it's an off brand memory, but it matches the specs required. I don't understand the sometimes it will, sometimes it won't issue.

Thanks in Advance!

The new memory is either faulty or incompatible.

I have similar issues with upgrading my Inspiron 5100 with two 512 MB PC2700 333MHz sticks.  When I try to boot with them installed, the SCROLL LOCK and NUMBERS LOCK LED's flash simultaneously ten (10) times and then the computer shuts down.

The support I received from the manufacturer, PNY, was to upgrade the BIOS (this can be dangerous to your system, but be cautious if you go this route), but I was not able to get it to work yet.

From what I've read, some DELL laptops have issues when putting the maximum amount of memory into it.  I have yet to find a solution on this, but if the modules work individually, I would doubt this would be faulty RAM.

I'm taking the memory back and exchanging it just to take that out of the equation. I've got the latest BIOS from Dell intalled now. A coworker has the exact system I have and upgraded his using a different brand of memory and had zero issues.

If I remove one and put my 512 in that came with it, i still get the same problem.

Last night it booted fine until I shut down for the evening. I figured I try it this morning and the problem was back. Pulled the memory and will be exchanging it at lunch today.

Hello guys

first of all you should try to run the onboard diagnostics on your computer because it might be a problem of the memory slot not the memory module

turn off the computer, press FN key and hold it down, turn on the computer (remember to keep holding the funtion key) you will see something like diagnostic boot selected, or preboot system assesment, if you see that you can now stop holding the FN key, try to run the extended memory test and see if the computer fail it.

try to rub out with an eraser the gold contacts of the memory and put then back on, and make sure they fit well.
