Inspiron 6000 battery issue/indicator light question

Question

My Inspiron 6000's battery light is flashing orange.  Can anyone tell me what the light directly next to the battery light is for?  It flashes orange and then occassionally flashes green.  The power light is fine.    My battery does not work at all.  I can only use the laptop while it is plugged in.  When I looked up the Control Panel/Printers and Other Hardware/Power Options/Power Meter tab, it shows that the battery is 93% charged.  My warranty is expired but I spoke with someone from Dell yesterday who checked and said my battery is not recalled.    I searched this sight and found that the flashing orange battery light indicates 'Fatal Battery Failure'.  I'll buy a new battery if I have to but I don't want to purchase one only to find out that there is another problem.   Thanks in advance, Tara

One or more of the cells in the battery is dead - it needs to be replaced.

give you suggestion: don't try to buy new one. I have already bought new battery but the problem is still existed. I never buy Dell again.

I have exactly the same problem !! 4 orange flashes and one green one. it looks like Dell is forcing us to buy new batteries whereas the one you still se is perfectly OK. Mine started to do this overnight. i have the more expensive 9 cell battery. Apparently the batteries hold a counter and when a set number of recharger is reached the problem will start to display for a perfect battery. http://west-wind.com/WebLog/posts/365.aspx i wonder how many of those people had real Dell batteries and read the manual on how to charge a battery ? many of the problems are refurbished laptops , why should Dell be held accountable for those ? The comment I see in a few of these posts is 'I never use the battery, now I went to use it and it's dead.' In my experience, if you use your battery alot, it live long. If you never use it, it dies young.

i also have suffered the same problem. i have found that when the orange light flashes my battery will die very soon. if it is constantly on, then my battery is already dead and when i pull out the charger, the laptop turns off (however when i remove the battery and then re-insert it, the battery seems to work and the orange light goes off constant and flashes. sometimes it goes back to normal. rarely now.) this is a horrible problem especially when i have kept the laptop in mint condition. im disspapointed if there is no help available.
