The only reason to buy the 8600 over the 600m is for the widescreen or gaming. If you dont need those, go with the 600m.

Agreed ... based on your needs, I see no reason for you to purchase the 8600.  The 600m is quite powerful and portable.  It's not a gaming machine though ...

The other major issue is that the 8600 uses an AGP card, which may be upgradeable.  The 600m uses soldered-on video that is not upgradeable.

Advantages of the 8600:

  • Bigger screen
  • Firewire
  • Longer-lasting (heavier) battery

I can't tell which has a better display adapter; they seem to vary between ATI and nVidia

I use my 600m mostly with a 2nd battery in the modular bay. The ultra high-res screen (1400 x 1050 15" screen) has taken some adjustment and getting used to, but I like it very much now.

The spec sheets seem to indicate that the 8600 uses 333 MHz memory, while the 600m uses 266, but I don't think there's a diffference, since the two use the same chipset, processors and 400 MHz bus speed. I think maybe the specs are just written a little differently.

The 8600 is physically a lot wider, but otherwise looks the same. I think I'd be happy to have either one, but when I'm travelling, I'm sure happier to have a smaller laptop that will fit on an airplane tray table.

Oh, and I play 3D games on the 600m. Sometimes. Don't tell anybody. But I'm happy with the games I play.

The i8600 also offers an ultra high resulution screen (WUXGA is 1920 x 1200 pixels). You can also configure it with the Hitachi 7k60 HD, which is a big advantage in my view. But for your uses I think the 600m is more suitable.
