Yes you can, I have in mine I get to utilise 3.25gb out of the 4Gb of RAM, I definately recommend the upgrade.

Your looking for 2 of 2gb density 200 Pin DDR2 SoDimm - 1.8v - PC2-5300 RAM modules.

If in the UK I recommend here: http://www.offtek.co.uk/ddr2.php?subcat=70&subcat1=44&subgroup=1&memtype=DDR2-PC5300 these are the parts I am using.

Results from my crucial scan:

Your Dell Inspiron E1505 specifications (its a 6400 E1505 = 6400)

  • Maximum Memory Capacity:  2048MB
  • Currently Installed Memory:  4GB
  • Available Memory Slots:  0
  • Number of Banks:  2
  • Dual Channel Support:   Yes
  • CPU Manufacturer:  GenuineIntel
  • CPU Family:  Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2130 @ 1.86GHz Model 14, Stepping 12
  • CPU Speed:  1867 MHz
  • Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

The E1505/6400 uses either the Intel 945M (nVidia or ATI video) or 945GM (Intel integrated video) chipset.

July 12th, 2009 16:00

Thanks. My question stems from the documentation put up on the Intel website for 945GM.

http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/309219.pdf

(page 23)

It states that a maximum of 4GB Ram is supported by the Chipset. But it also says it supports only 256-Mb, 512-Mb and 1-Gb memory technologies. Which makes me wonder how that is possible. Because 4GB RAM supported would be tantamount to 4 ram cards installed.

Please correct me if I am understanding something incorrectly.

Thanks

Aditya

Before you buy, be sure you know what your vendor's restock/replacement fee is - it may or may not work.

True, but most likely 2G modules didn't exist when the specs were written - this is a relatively old chipset.

So theoretically I can still install two memory cards each of 2 GB right?

Thanks

Aditya

I have the integrated graphics GM 945 intel it works with 2×2Gb modules with about 3.25Gb of the RAM usable, its a worthwhile investment.

Others have reported the same finding with the ATI graphics card on the GM 945 intel board.

So therefore we have concluded for all inspiron 6400s and E1505s you can put in 4Gb of RAM and utilise 3.25Gb.

It was probabally too problematic for them to support 4Gb at the time due to the price of the RAM and they may have had alot of customer complaints if they could not use the full 4Gb for the price the upgrade would have been.

Note one other user installed a 64bit OS on thier inspiron 6400 and managed to get 1Mb more RAM then me so that was rather pointless and they had a hard time finding the 64bit driver set for this model.

4GB for 32OS (vista) i think its a waste of your money  you help your fellow humens in africa. what i say if you have 1Gb in one slot you can put another 1GB in remaining slot. but  if you have 512in one slot remove this and instal 1GB in each slot, but more wise thing is to install 2GB in single slot. i have done this and my system is working faster then my reflexes.

I was under the impression you lost 10% performance with mismatched pairs.

You'll lose 10-15% in overall performance with mismatched soDIMMs - and it may or may not work.

Hi i need some help and im hoping someone on here can!!!

i have a dell inspiron 6400 and its a few years old now and running very slow. when i bought the laptop i had 1GB memory added by dell, so im thinking of upgrading the ram again... what do you recommend i read this thread and it seems i can have upto 4GB of ram even thou its recommended that 2GB is the max. I have bought an external hard drive to store things like photos etc on to free hard drive space.

Will upgrading the ram make it much better, i have to admit im a novice in the world of pc maintence and upgrading but the laptop is still like new condition wise and dont really want to shell out 3-4 hundred quid on a new one

So now im unsure what is best....You guys seem to know what your talking about, so how do you recommend i speed up my laptop.

Hoping you can help

Neil

Adding more RAM will certainly help. I recommend at least 2Gb for XP and 4Gb if your using Vista.

However reloading windows will be very benefically especially if your system has slowed down with respect to time. Performance will be greatly increased with a fresh install of windows, below are step by step instructions for either XP or Vista on the Dell Inspiron 6400.

Make sure you backup all your files on your external harddrive and have all the discs below. Download all the files I have listed below and save them in an external harddrive in order so you know exactly what they all are. before proceeding with the install (or use another computer to download them onto the drive while doing the install). Install drivers in order listed.

.

Discs you will require are:

1. Dell Media Direct Disc

2. XP or Vista Disc

3. Microsoft Office Disc of Microsoft Works

4. Roxio or Sonic Solutions Disc

5. Any other software you use will need to be downloaded from the internet or reinstalled from CD/DVD

XP

Insert media direct disc and switch off your 6400 press and hold F12 whilst powering up and select boot from disc then selection 1 or 2 (1 is recommended unless you want to create another partition)

Now when the discs finished and prompts you to change for your XP disc do so and as it reboots hold down F12 and start reinstalling windows:

Meanwhile... Download the following onto another machine and copy to a CD/DVD flash drive or external hard drive:

Copy the following to a CD or DVD or external hard drive.

1. Download XP Service Pack 3:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

Download the following drivers from here:

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

2. Dell System Notebook Software Under System Utilities

3. Both the Chipset drivers

4. Then the Intel Video Driver (or ATI or NVIDEA depending what you have)

5. Then the two Conexant Drivers Under Communications

6. Then the two Broadcom Drivers Under Network

7. Then depending what you have Dell Wireless Card or Intel PROSET Wireless under Network

8. Then the Sigmatel Driver under Audio

9. Then Synaptics Touchpad under Input Devices

10. Then the Dell Quickset under Applications

11. Bluetooth Driver under network if you have Bluetooth, will be a Blue Light if switched on if you have a bluetooth card.

12. Install the two Dell Diagnostic Drivers

13. Go here: http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061029/royale-noir/ and you can download a Black XP and XP Media Centre Edition Colours.

14. Download and install windows media player 11 and the Klite Codec Pack:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&DisplayLang=en

http://www.adobe.com/

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57796

http://www.cutepdf.com/

Ok now install all the drivers in the order I specified. (13. - 15. Optional) Restart and load up windows, now insert you dell media direct disc and it should prompt you to install if not go to my computer and double click the disc to install note install while on the windows desktop or you'll format your harddrive again.

Once thats done press the dell media direct button, note do not do so before this stage. Set it up for configuration and go to update note you will have to go to update 2 -3 times to get the latest version which I believe is 4.7. Once thats dome power down your computer and press the media direct button and smile since it should be working.

Then go to xp and install all other such as antivirus and office programs copy music and documents over etc. Be sure to go to windows update to get internet explorer 7 aswell. Note if using McAfee and have a valid subscription, you can get it from the McAfee website.
