Inspiron 8000 bios temperature control

My Inspiron 8000 1Ghz was not turning on, so I did removed all the CRUs and followed many posts to this forum. I decided it was time to purchase another motherboard from Ebay, like so many recommend here. The problem with my computer not turning on, appears to have been the motherboard because now it will turn on. The problem I am having with this motherboard is the bios doesn't keep the heat under control. When I got the mother board it had the Latitude A22 bios, and I flashed it to Inspiron A22. If I don't run the fan gui, and just let the bios control the temperature, eventually my computer gets up above 80Deg C and locks up. After that it enters it's "punishment mode" of not turning on until it gets cooled down. I have bought a tube of Artic Silver, and put it on the CPU to make sure that it cools as well as it can. I am using the same heat sync that was on my original I8000, but I figured this was OK. I would much rather have the bios turn on the fans earlier so it doesn't get so hot. 80 Deg C is way too hot for any CPU. Is there a way to have the bios control the temperature at a lower level, so I don't have to rely on FanGUI. I am not always running Windows, (Linux, Dos) so I cannot rely on a Windows utility to control the fans.

Also, my splash screen is not filling up the whole screen, it is just staying at 640 x 480. The original one would expand to fill the full 1600 x 1280 screen. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Russell

Do I understand that you had the same temp problem on both motherboards?  If so, since the temp sensor is on the cpu you could have a problematic cpu.  If you had a second cpu (any P3 uPGA2 package mobile chip) you could monitor that one with fangui and see if it regulates at a lower temp.  Just from the BIOS (IIRC) it turns the fans on at 65C and off around 50-55C.  What I don't understand is why the BIOS routine is allowing the cpu to reach 80C.

[Edit] Forgot to add Fn+F7 while the boot splash is small will stretch it to full screen.

I am not sure why my reply to your message didn't show up here, so I will try to remember what I wrote. The reason my original motherboard died, was because a small triangular metal bracket fell off of the motherboard and it and it's screw were roaming freely around my case. It fastens at the back of the motherboard behind the PCMCIA slots. Folks, keep and eye on this thing, as it only has one screw to hold it on. My problem seems to have been that I needed to reseat the processor and heat sink. Even though I had been really careful when putting it back together, I guess it wasn't quite right. I assume the CPU was not touching the heat sink very well, even though when the fans would run, it would cool down. I stayed at the A17 bios, mainly because I am believing in the "It if it it not broke, don't fix it" mindset. Although, now that I am not too afraid to open up my laptops (I have an 8200 also) I just ordered a 2.5Ghz processor for $368.00 for it.

Thanks,

Russell
