Inspiron 8100 Hard Drive Replacement ?

I have been given an Inspiron 8100 laptop, but with no hard drive.

I want to buy a hard drive, but not sure how to load a new OS when the BIOS cannot recognize

the optical drive. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

The BIOS won't recognize the optical drive until you install a hard drive.  The two share a controller.

If you don't have it, you'll need a caddy and interposer to mount a drive:

Into it, you can place any standard, 2.5" 9.5 mm EIDE (NOT SATA)   notebook drive, 120G or smaller.  DO NOT try a larger capacity drive - it won't work.

Thanks ejn63,

I was thinking it might be something basic like that!
