Make sure 'mic boost' is turned off via the recording control panel . Adjust the input source volume before it gets to the mic jack. That's more important than the level of the recording volume. I have recorded minidisc thru the mic jack of my Inspiron 1100 with Sigmatel Cmajor chip, without a problem, so hope this helps. Jim

Please note that the 9100 uses a MONO mic input. You might want to consider purchasing an Audigy 2.
