Inspiron Graphics card help. Not sure whats wrong. Computer randomly shuts off.

I got this Dell Ispiron 5100 just about a year ago. Being the avid gamer that I am, I was playing multiple games on it and they all worked great. This past summer though, my computer obtained a virus so I had it taken care of and reinstalled Windows. I came back here to Dell.com and downloaded the latest graphics driver from the downloads section. When I went to play the games I had played before, they ran super slow and have developed the problem where my computer will just randomly shut down approximately 1-2hours into a game. It is getting to point where it is unbearable and I pretty sure that my warranty has just expired. If anyone knows a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

My first question would be...

Were you using those same drivers before the reinstall?  If not try installing the same ones you were using.

Before you reinstalled Windows, did you reformat your hard drive?  It's possible that the virus survived a simple reinstall if it wasn't properly eradicated before a reinstall, and is now gumming up your new install.  I normally always reformat when reinstalling because you never know.

After the reinstall did you run msconfig, get rid of unused services and any spyware or unwanted startup programs that normally slow a system down?

Did you update Windows?  Did you update to Service Pack 2 or Directx 9.0c when you weren't running either of them before the reinstall?

Just some things to try.  Good luck.
