You cannot replace just the mainboard - you will need the mainboard, a new heatsink assembly, all new RAM, and possibly other parts.  You'll also have support for ONLY the first generation i5/i7 CPUs - nothing newer.

Given the cost of all the parts, forget it - you can buy a complete new i7 system with warranty for not much more than the used parts to retrofit yours.

Thanks ejn. I appreciate your advice, as I am not that experienced with these things.

But, I would still ask for your opinion cosidering:

I already have a 750GB SSD (not the HDD) in my system, and currently 8GB of RAM. I am considering upgrading the RAM to 16GB anyway.

The current system has a re-writer Blu Ray and the highest screen resolution.

To upgrade to get the iCore7 with a new system would cost me in excess of $3,000. I am from Australia and the Australian Dell website is more expensive than the US one (when you convert with the exchange rate).

I would like to see the costs of the mainboard and heatsink assembly. Which mainboard? is it:

1558 Intel Laptop Motherboard s989 G936P F7TFM 31FM9MB0020

That is around $100.

Which heatsink?

If I could work out the costs of everything and see if I could do it (researching) I should be able to make an informative decision.

Appreciate your help.

None of these systems will take 16G of RAM -they all have 8G limits.

G936P has integrated Intel video - even if it's for the i-series CPU, it won't work with an i7, as the first-generation i7 mobile CPU you need has no onboard video - you must use a board with ATI video on it.
