Kernel upgrades and alsa for Inspiron Intel sound cards using snd-hda-intel module
My laptop is Inspiron 1525 Core 2 purchased May 2008 and here is the relevant lspci output that may be of use to help establish if the Ubuntu Kernel and alsa are compatible and working well.

To a Dell Admin with unlocked access to the 'Audio' section of the Wiki:
The above information needs adding to the wiki at the following new section:
===82801H (ICH8 Family) High Definition Audio Controller with STAC9228 Codec===
of the existing locked page:
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php?title=Tech/Audio&action=edit§ion=1
Identification of the STAC9228 Codec I verified from the following:
::::::::::::::
/proc/asound/card0/codec#2
::::::::::::::
Codec: SigmaTel STAC9228
Address: 2
Vendor Id: 0x83847616
Subsystem Id: 0x10280242
Revision Id: 0x100201
All of the above post is intended to give a helping hand to anyone else who is using an Inspiron 1525 Core 2 and has lost sound by accepting the latest Kernel upgrade (2.6.22-14 -> 2.6.22-15) of Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10)
for which I have opened a bug at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/242615
I suspect might have a temporary workaround by setting some module options for snd-hda-intel
Whilst I delve into this a bit more I just, for now, select Kernel 2.6.22-14 in grub if I need to watch a film with normal sound.
Gary.

workaround on ubuntu wiki
Reading the above and following either of Method G or Method L workarounds are a possibility for Inspiron 1525 owners running Ubuntu Gutsy.
Both methods have their merits - and Method L describes what I have done to workaround this issue on my laptop.
My reported bug is related some to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/131133
As Gutsy is not the most recent version of Ubuntu anymore a perfect fix might not come about.
