I have the same problem on the same system. The solution worked for me, but I want to know what the root cause is and how to avoid this problem. This there a hardware issue with this laptop model?

Adub,
The root cause can be software related or hardware related. I would be guessing if I were to name a specific issue. You should remove all external hardware devices from the system and reinstall the software drivers.
A good friend who is disabled had her inspiron 1100 keyboard lockup and stop working. Dell support was no help.Your fix got her back online again with her laptop.
thank you sooooooo much "sdennick" i just had the same problem..n ur solution worked like a charm.....if i didnt knew bout this site i would\v freaked out...but wut is the problem with this model..since im not the only 1 who xperienced the same problem as many others.
After spending over an hour on the phone with Dell Tech Support, (and ordering a new keyboard), I decided to try your quick fix just for the heck of it and it worked. However, when I use certain alpha keys, they do not type what they're supposed to!! For instance....the K key types a 4, the E key types a 3 and so forth. Have you ever heard of such a thing? (Anyway, I am using an external keyboard to type this and will await the new keyboard). Note that my laptop was purchased in November of 2002 and of course, the warranty has just expired. I'm wondering, is this a common problem with the 2650's? Thanks for your help though...it was appreciated. (Wish I would have tried your fix before calling Dell, lol!!)

Well, I know it's not a hardware issue since an external keyboard will work, however, I'm not sure how to fix this issue permanently. (Pehaps it's a Windows problem and needs to be reinstalled?) It seems that the quick fix method worked in getting the keyboard to function but now we have the issue of the keys not typing correctly. I would welcome any suggestions since the Dell Tech support do not have an answer for this problem.
But mine is a little different.... I'm typing along and after about 4-10 lines the screen spits out the last line out about 5x's then the keyboard stops working...the mouse, and touchpad are fine - not even using an external keyboard helps.. it does the same thing.... it went back to Dell for repair.. I got it back today... but it still does this.. I'm not impressed.. also.. the little fan on the back.. in the middle stopped working period and that was part of my complaint and still it's not working either.... so I've taken to reinstalling winxp
I've had nothing but troubles with this notebook from like day 5...
Let me know how it works after reinstalling winxp. I'm pretty sure the keyboard issue is a windows problem. The fan, however, is probably something else.
I too had this problem more than once...
I reinstalled winXP to lose SP1 that seemed to fix my problem although I (did install the alternative version of SP1)
also upgraded BIOS to A11 and drivers too. Hadn't tried this posted fix tho.

My 8 month old Insprion 2650 have similar keyboard froze up problem from last week.
sdennick's trick will work , but after a while (I mean couple minutes to an hour or two)
the key board and touch pad will froze up suddenly again.
When I tried hot start for couple times, it will work but will die soon. or the PC may gimme
twice of 1 long beep and 3 short beep. Anyway i need to cold start.
(The beeps described in the maual saying somethine wrong with the video - but works fine)
Except the key board and touch pad everything work normally.
(I can remotly login)
External PS/2 mouse will stop working at the same time.
Feels like some heat problem!? but other components have no problem.
I referred to the old posts and found some people have same symptoms.
I tried to update the BIOS to A11 also tried to re-install the Keyboard and Mouse driver, but no improvement.
Should I contact customer service? or any help?
Thank you in advance.
