Keyspan UPR-112 port replicator issues

I can't get my Inspiron XPS laptop to recognize what I will call a parallel port 'security dongle'. It is actually the 'Pro Key' for my Accel DFI Engine Management software. It is meant to be plugged into the older style parallel port (LPT1) and will unlock advance features of the software when detected properly. The Accel DFI technical support folks have tested and recommend the Keyspan UPR-112 mini port replicator to connect the key (dongle) to computers without dedicated parallel ports. This port replicator connects both parallel and serial ports through USB. They went on to tell me that there were no special setup requirements needed as the software checks for the key on LPT1 first and then goes to check USB. They must not have tested on an XPS...

I have had absolutely no luck getting my key detected this way. I'm using Windows XP Home as the OS. I've done everything from eliminating all other running applications through the task manager, to doing a complete wipe and reinstall of XP. I took time along the way to troubleshoot before applying each service pack or update...and here I am writing this... I guess I have two questions:

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this problem?

Is there a way to rename or remap the ports to 'fool' the software (ie make USB001 = LPT1 when it checks)?

Thanks.
