Laptop Display zoom automatically grows 1000% when connected to TV

I have a Dell Latitude. When I connect it via VGA cable to my LCD TV, the display on the laptop (and of course the TV too) when I go to any application (e.g. MS Word, Internet Explorer) automatically starts growing to 1000% by about 100% per second.

I can reset it to 100% but as soon as I move the cursor, it starts growing again. I can continue to reset it but it just grows and gorwas again and again. Argh!

I had the same problem with my dell inspiron 6000 laptop (windows xp) and was hoping to find a solution here. But, suffice to say, I worked it out on my own and here is the solution.

  1. Right click on an unused portion of your desktop and click "properties"
  2. Then click on the "settings" tab in the dialogue box
  3. Then click "advanced"
  4. Then click "troubleshooting" **Note- Don't click on "troubleshooting" before "advanced" above as it won't get you where you need to go.
  5. Then slide the "hardware acceleration" all the way to the left to turn it to NONE
  6. Then click "apply" in the dialogue box followed by "ok" and "ok" to close the dialogue boxes
  7. Next, plug in your RGB cable to your pc and to the tv
  8. Using your TV input, change the input to RGB
  9. Now, REBOOT your PC with the RGB cable connected and the TV input set to RGB
  10. Once rebooted, Hold the function key (fn) and your corresponding function key for the CRT/LCD (Mine is F8)
  11. Wait a couple of seconds and see which display it gives you. If it is on both the PC and the TV it will not work right as this graphics card does not support the dual monitor. You are looking to have the display on the TV ONLY and not on the PC
  12. If you do not have the TV Only, hit the Fn key and F8 (at the same time) again and wait to make sure that only the TV is displayed.
  13. You should be up and running without the auto zoom snaffu or the flickering >Start menu

The whole key to this is disabing hardware acceleration on your monitor, having the cable plugged in when you reboot, having the TV INPUT set to RGB when it is rebooted, and getting to the right monitor display by using Fn F8. Hope this helps someone to not go through the time it has taken me to fix this on my own.
