Laptop Screen Gone Crazy

I have an Inspiration 5720 that is about six months old.  Twice today the screen has suddenly had multicolored lines going across the entire screen and at the same time it sounds like the vents on the left side of the laptop are louder like something is running.  This is when nothing is running, no video playing, nothing in the dvd player, just something simple like checking email.

Any clues as to what's wrong?

Thank you  :emotion-1:

First thing to  do is attach an external monitor.  Does it show a clear image (problem with cable or LCD most likely) or the same fault (bad mainboard)?

HI seraphina6,

As suggested by ejn63, you may try connecting an external monitor and see if the issue replicates. I would also suggest you to run LCD BIST on the system, you may get an error in case there is an issue with the LCD. To run the LCD BIST (Built in Self-test) Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the power button, then release both simultaneously . You may refer to article Here.

This will initiate a grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green then White, to allow you to inspect the entire LCD for color purity on each screen and to better identify defect such as cracks in the LCD or stuck pixels that may not be apparent in a normal viewing mode.

You may also run the diagnostics on the system to check the hardware functionality. You may follow the steps below :

  • Power on the computer
  • Press F12 button when you see Dell logo on the screen
  • Highlight the Diagnostics option and press Enter
  • Note down error messages if any and reply with the outcome

Please try to determine the type of noise coming from the left side of laptop. If it is a grinding fan noise, I would suggest you to clean air vents of computer. Below are the steps to clean the air vents:

  • Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through
  • Turn off the System
  • Unplug the AC Adapter
  • Remove the Battery
  • Use Compressed Air to blow the dust out of the vents

You may also refer to article Here

Note: Please use compressed air can. When using compressed air can, use the can according to the directions on the side of the can as it may cause damage to the computer if used incorrectly.

If the issue persists, Please share the BIOS version of your system. You may follow the steps below to locate the BIOS version :

  • Press Windows + R button on keyboard
  • Type 'msinfo32' without quotes and press Enter
  • You will find the BIOS version listed in front of BIOS version/Date

If the BIOS Version is below A17, you may update the BIOS to A17 version from Here. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart the computer when prompted.

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that the system is connected to a surge protector.
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

Hope this helps.
