Typical middle of the range laptop will draw 20-30 watts, about 2-2.5 amps. If you really want to know, there is a battery utility that will show the draw. I used to use it to tune the power settings, but don't remember the name. Search the web.
There is no "average" notebook. The power draw is listed on the AC adapter and will depend on the system - from very low to a netbook to very high to a high-performance system with a high-end video adapter.
