Laptop build location

Just a curiosity really...

I read somewhere on the boards then when a computer is in the "boxing" stage, it's coming back to the US from Malaysia where it was assembled.  Are the Inspirons built over there too, or does it depend on the order where your computer is built.  I'm just wondering if my laptop will be more well traveled than I when it arrives.

Compal and Quanta make the Dell (and most other) notebooks.  Malaysia it is.

I was wondering the same, my laptop has been in the boxing stage for the past two days. That's a lot of time for boxing". but I guess it's probably on it 's way to the US.

Ah!  I just received notification that my 8600 has been shipped. I checked the UPS tracking info and saw that the origination point was Richmond, CA?  I was thinking, what the heck?  Dell has a plant in Richmond?

last time I ordered a computer it came from TX, maybe they have a plant in Cali as well, maybe mine will get here faster! (oregon)

Just talked to a friend who used to work at Dell and he told me the plants are in TX and TN, but they weren't for laptops.  I'm glad to have found an explanation as to why it took them only a day to build and test the laptop, but four days for 'boxing'.

Sorry, you're close, but no cigar. Dell does not have an assembly plant in Richmond, CA.

However, living only 35 miles from Richmond, I can tell you this, Richmond does do a large Cargo Ship receiving business, and they also have a large UPS Receiving/Transfer Station. Your laptop undoubtedly was taken straight from the ship to the local UPS Terminal ("Origination point" IN THE USA, that is) for UPS truck delivery to you. Happy putering.

Best regards,

Roger

4 days?  That seems like a long time.... is that common?  Mine just went into boxing this afternoon, if they're going ot make their ship date they need to get it out faster than that!

I know, that's a long time, but I'm trying to be patient. Although it's driving me crazy!
