Laptop cannot restart
Recently, my Inspiron 8600 has been unable to reboot properly. If I choose the restart option the computer shuts down but cannot then start again. The notebook sounds like it is on (i.e. the fan is on, sounds like the processor and hard drive are working), however, the screen remains blank. The cap locks and scroll lock lights remain solid but the num light lock is not lit. I then have to force shutdown the computer. The computer is also unable to turn on (i.e. the computer sounds like it is on but the screen is blank) for a number of minutes regardless of whether I force shutdown, restart or just shutdown normally. Again, the cap locks and scroll lock are lit, the computer stays 'on' for about 5 seconds and then turns off.
Does anyone know what is causing this problem? And how to fix it?
Thank you.

Is there a faint image on the screen and a good image on an external monitor?

I don't use an external monitor, and when I try to turn on the laptop the screen remains solid black, like it hasn't even turned on.

I've heard problems with RAM could be the cause. Also, I ran chkdsk and it said the hard rive was clean, and sfc. It seems to me that the computer will only boot again when it is stone cold.
