Laptop hard drive readable but unbootable

Got a WD Scorpio Black for my Precision M65 Notebook just a few months ago. (People warned me against WD but I didn't listen). System uses XP Pro with SP3.

Yesterday it started making a lot of clicking noises, got a BSOD, and afterwards got that "no boot devices" message.

The funny thing is that the drive is readable using a USB connector.

What gives?  Is there a way to make this drive bootable again while retaining the data on it?

Thanks - backing up and downloading now.

Can the Data Lifeguard potentially make the disk bootable again, or is it purely diagnostic?

Sounds like the drive is failing.  If it's readable by USB, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.

Then preparea  WD Data Lifeguard CD (download from WD) and run a full diagnostic on the system.  If it fails, which is likely will, record the error and set up an RMA for replacement with WD.

It is diagnostic - yes, it can do repairs, but it sounds very likely the drive is faulty and will need to be replaced.
