I wouldn't do it but I'm sure that the people at the X-ray machine know what to do. I would just ask them when you get there.

I believe the manual says that x-ray is ok, metal detector isn't.  However, just to be safe, I'd ask for a physical search and power up.  No sense in taking the risk on an expensive peice of equipment.

Is it safe to put a laptop through the XRAY machine at the airport? The XRAY machine will not harm the laptop, but you should be careful to keep your eyes on the laptop at all times, since security checkpoints (and airports in general) are a common place for theft. Never, never check a laptop with the airline. Always carry it on board.

These folks are all correct; x-ray = good, metal detector = bad.

One thing I have done is just before I check through security is to turn my notebook on and put it in my bag. I do this because, I have been made to "tear it down" twice (once nearly missing a flight). Now when asked, I simply show it running and no problems. Very important note - If you are going to do this, ensure that you turn your system off at your earliest opportunity (prior to boarding) as you could cause an overheat in the bag.

To the person who suggested to turn on the laptop in the bag: I think you're idea is great except for the "in the bag" part. Keeping a laptop on in the bag for even the short length of time of going through a metal detector is not a good idea. I suggest that if you are going to turn it on to possibly save time, it's a good idea I think, do not put it in your bag, put it in the plastic bins that they have to put items in the metal detector.

I'm the person in question.

First off, you mention METAL DETECTOR. We don't put it in the bag to go anywhere near the METAL DETECTOR. It is only safe to put it through the X-RAY.

Second, I put it in the bag for protection. I'm not sure when the last time you went through the "conveyor belt" at an x-ray machine but, I've been at many a boarding where the bags are jammed together. I certainly not going to let my machine get banged and bumped around in an unstable plastic (usually too small) tray - you need the bag!  Also you have at least a 50/50 chance of them wanting to inspect your rig at the end of the belt so, you are likely going to have to take it out anyways. If it's running, your will to be on your way sooner than if you have to tear it down.

Lastly, I have a P4 with 1Gig of RAM, I've had it in the bag for half an hour and the fan wasn't even on so, as I said in my earlier post, shut it off "prior to boarding", I'm sure you'll be fine. On the other hand, If you forget to shut it off and get on the flight, it's likely there will be a fire extinguisher in your future.
