It would be best NOT to upgrade to win 10. Laptops do not have all the necessary dell drivers to run 10 and there never will be any dell win 10 drivers for E6410. Windows 7 is the best option.
About the battery--consider using the laptop without a battery since Dell replacement batteries are required and that can be too expensive--over $139. If it works without the battery installed using just the adapter, it can be a desktop replacement. If refurbishing costs over $100, it would be better to buy a tablet or a budget laptop or desktop for $229* instead. Laptops usually last for 3-4 years so that model is on its last legs and is not worth spending much or any money on.
You should have a 90 W charger. Once you have it see if the battery charges. If it does then update your BIOS to the latest revision in Windows 7 then directly clean install Windows 10 TH2 from installation media.
I missed something the first time through. The dell disc won't have the drivers either. Dell used to include a separate driver disc(s). Just download the drivers from the dell website:
You can usually pick up a Dell disc on ebay for $10-20. Having both an i5 & an i7 e6410, a 65 watt charger will charge the battery. On the i7 laptop you will get warnings saying the 65 watt charger is not adequate. The 90 watt charger will charge faster. Considering the age and value of the laptop, an aftermarket battery is exactly what you want. I'd go with the 9 or 12 cell battery for longer life and obviously the longest warranty you can find. The flashing amber light generally means a bad cell or totally bad battery. The Microsoft 64 bit license allows you to install a 64 bit or 32 bit operating system. The 32 bit operating system will only see up to 4GB of memory and the 64 bit OS will allow you to max out the e6410 at 8GB of memory.
I feel that she should have the 90 W charger as well, but she says that she does not have it, so what do I do? I assume the laptop will operate with either? Would it be better to get a replacement charger? Where can we get one where it will still be cost effective?
I have not checked the BIOS revision. I assume is it still on the original.
OK, good to know about Win 10. Although i just upgraded my old Vostro 1500 and have not had any issues. I don't use it a lot.
Why do you say that a "Dell replacement is required"? This seems to be a topic of much debate. I am on my second 3rd party (different sources) battery for my Vostro 1500 and have not had an issue with either. My dad has a 3rd party replacement in his laptop, and no issues. A friend has one also, and no issues. I understand that there is risk, but is avoiding that risk worth spending 4-5 times as much?
What about batteries being sold as "genuine" from a reputable seller on ebay? Are these imitations?
I does work with the battery removed and I have considered proposing this as a solution to my friend.
Steven, thanks for the info regarding the 65 vs 90 watt power supply. As I got to thinking throughout the day today, I wondered if maybe the 95 watt was for the more power hungry i7 variation of this model.
I thought that maybe the Dell branded OS disc had more drivers "injected" into the installer. There just does not appear to be many drivers to download when I enter the service tag, so I hope that the unidentified hardware after the install will update via Windows Update.

Good luck, that's a nice gift for a 9 yr old.

First do not use 10240 ensure you install 10586 TH2 which works a lot better than TH1. I advise clean installation:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-10-oem-and-retail-iso/
Also it appears you have the Intel Driver installed....
I see no mention about hardware IDs to determine if you have switchable graphics or an additional unknown device:

See also the 4th video on driver installation:

Are you using the 65 watt ac power supply or the 90 watt?
