Left Click Button Died on Studio 1555

Hiya,

I have a studio 1555 laptop, only 3-4 months old. However the left click button below the touch pad has died. It doesn't feel any different - as in it hasn't got stuck. It 'clicks' the same but windows doesn't respond. I do have a wireless mouse, but its a pain to keep using that all the time. Anyway to fix it?

The palmrest needs to be replaced.  It will be covered under warranty - call for repair.

You seemed very certain that replacing the palmrest assembly would fix this problem, ejn63--do you have any idea if it in fact worked? I'm having what sounds like a very similar problem with my Inspiron 9300.

Could you possibly reply with a link for the part I would need to fix my own left-click problem? Thank you!

ejn63 is absolutely correct.  Here is an example of what you need.

I know nothing about this seller.  You can search on EBAY.  There are some there for sale.

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being complete loser and 5 being computer expert, what level of repair is this process?

Probably about a 4.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Started in safe mode, and the touchpad functionality seems fine. I recently had to replace my hard drive, and install XP with all the drivers. At the time (about 3 months ago), the touchpad was fine, though the whole driver-installation process seems kind of cryptic to me--difficult to determine which ones to install in the correct order,  which drivers are which, which are optional as opposed to necessary, etc.

At any rate, I have the drivers on a disc so I can reinstall--but this is the first time I've lost the touchpad functionality. What next?

Well, after starting in safe mode as you suggested, it's been working fine with no corrections. Didn't uninstall anything, did nothing in any way, and now it is functioning as normal once again.

Odd.

I'm going to save this response, however, in case the problem reoccurs. Thank you for your suggestion, though!

But if it's now working with no issues, is it really corrupted?
