Line In recording from stereo boom box to computer
I have a Studio 1558 laptop and am attempting to record a radio station from my boom box to the laptop using the line in option on Polderbits. However, it does not work, as I am only able to record statio ns whose audio feed is available online via their websites. I had a similar problem with my Inspiron 1551. I know it involved downloading a particular file, but I can't find the file on the Dell Support forum. Can someone help me please?

Does your Sound properties look like this?
If you do not see the word "IDT" then the IDT audio driver is not installed. If you do see the word IDT then make sure that "microphone/line in" is selected as the default recording source, and not "rec.playback".

Correction: The middle option says default device on my computer. Now, can you please tell me how to change it to the correct settings? Thank you!

I just checked my computer (running win 7 btw) and on mine...it says not plugged in on the first and last option and currently unavailable on the middle one. How can I change the settings to match what appears in your example? Thanks!

It does say "IDT", right? Try right clicking in the white area and select to show disconnected devices. If the line in is there then see it you can make it the default. If that doesn't work try show disabled devices. If that doesn't work then re-install the IDT audio driver.
Btw I remember you from your 1501 question. I asked you some questions to help me understand your situation but you did not reply.

update: Sorry I wasn't looking at the right tab on Sound..you are correct, Jim. that's exactly what my Sounds tab looks like, but I still can't get a recording when trying to record to the boombox from the computer. Any other suggestions?

Check the connection. One end of the cable is plugged into the boombox to the headphone jack? Make sure the volume is not turned all the way down.
The other end of the cable is plugged into the computer's mic/line-in jack , not headphone jack? Make sure the computer is not configured for 5.1 surround sound. In that configuration the mic/line-in jack becomes an output jack.
Try using Windows Sound Recorder during this testing phase, to help eliminate configuration issues.
On the Sounds properties recording tab, select mic/line in and click "configure" and check the settings there.
I have not heard of any recording problems on the 1558. If still having problems try re-installing the IDT audio driver (uninstall it in Device Manager and reboot). That will reset the driver to its default settings.

I have tried all of your suggestions, except to reinstall the IDT driver. I will try that now...thanks

Run the recording test in Dell Diagnostics audio tests to make sure the mic jack is functioning properly.
