This does not appear to be the solution to my problem, though. The headphones and the microphone/line-in jacks work, and I can record and listen to the playback of the recording without any problems.
My issue is that I cannot listen to the microphone/line-in input in real-timewhile I am recording.
has anyone given you an answer to this yet that solved the problem? I have three days left to return this laptop, and I may if this cannot be made functional
Nobody has replied to my question yet (Not even Dell!!!). I did some research on the net, and nothing I tried worked; I tried different drivers, and I also tried playing with the registry, to no avail.
I was thinking about returning the laptop as well, but it seems that the only laptop on which you can monitor the line-in/microphone without hacking your machine in some way is the Mac, and unfortunately, as much as I would like to, for me getting a Mac is not really an option.

I was absolutely ape that I could not use two headphones on my 1730... till I blundered into the Sigmatel jack util and realized it was setup wrong.

Good luck.
