Boot the Dell Diagnostics and Utilities CD that came with the system and do a full test, particularly of the hard drive.

Or, go into Setup (F2) - is the hard drive still recognized? If not, reseat it. If it's still not recognized, it has failed. Replace it, reload and patch Windows, and restore your backups.
