M11xR2 Fatal DirectX error Code 3, Just Cause 2
I just purchased a new M11xR2 with the i7 cpu option. One of the first things I did was update the stock driver to the Dell provided Nvidia driver 257.30 released on July 19.
I then purchased Just Cause 2 from Steam and to my surprise this is what I get when I try and run the game:
"Fatal DirectX error!
Code: 3
Result: 0x887A0002: DXGI_ERROR_NOT_FOUND
The game will now exit. Try starting the game with /failsafe if the problem persist."
After much research on other forums, I have concluded that this issue is specific to the M11xR2 and the only solution is to DOWNGRADE to the stock Dell provided Nvidia driver that came pre-installed on the machine.
Common sense would tell us that the new (and improved) driver should make things better with all games. Instead, it makes things worse in the case of running Just Cause 2.
The purpose of this post is to inform Alienware/Dell of this issue and hopefully have a new driver released ASAP so customers aren't being forced to DOWNGRADE their driver in order to get a particular game to work.
If someone knows of a 100% confirmed fix, other than downgrading to the stock driver, please let me know. I don't need a bunch of ideas, I need a 100% confirmed fix that someone has tried on their M11xR2.
Thanks for listening!

I found the solution on the "Notebook Review" M11x discussion board but it's not an easy solution.
The easiest solution would be for Dell/Alienware to release an updated driver and I'm sure they will eventually.

I have the exact same problem, and it seems the only resolution through the forums are to roll back to factory drivers that came with the R2. The problem with this resolution is that it breaks everything else. I have only used OEM drivers, but it does not matter, this does not work. We need a new driver, while you are at it I would like a real fix for my dimming issue also.

The NVIDIA 258.96 driver fixes the Just Cause 2 DirectX Fatal Error and increases performance over the Dell provided driver but you must install a modded .INF file that adds the M11xR2 or you will not be able to successfully install.
The step-by-step instructions on how to install the NVIDIA 258.96 driver were posted on Notebook Review by forum member "Kopicha" on 07/12/10
I'm successfully running the modded 258.96 driver and Just Cause 2 runs as advertised. This driver also adds an icon that tells you when your Nvidia card is "on."
If Dell/Alienware software engineers would speed things up, then we wouldn't have to go through all this mumbo jumbo. They need to speed things up and keep drivers as current as possible!
Thanks to Kopicha...
