M6500 lost display and indicator lights

My Precision M6500 just lost the built in display and the indicator lights above the function keys, the light behind the power button and the keyboard backlighting.  The power LED on the side of the tablet still works.  The laptop is still functional with an external monitor.

The built in display will show a blinking cursor 4-5 times and then a line of distorted video before going black on boot up.

The display adapter still shows up in the bios, an ATI FirePro M7820.

I hate to lose this laptop as it is the last one with WUGXA resolution!  I would have focused on replacing the display adapter, but the additional problem with the LED lights leads me to believe the problem is elsewhere.  Running diagnostics simply runs on the external monitor.  Any thoughts on where to look for the problem or if this is an easily repairable problem?  Thanks for any help.

Hi DNZTX,

Is there any damage / liquid spillage on the system?

The video card is fine and hence the external monitor works.

Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG

Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

Swivel the LCD and check if the display comes back. Try focusing a flash light on the LCD and check if any display is faintly visible.

Restart the system and check in safe mode if the display works.

Hi Rishi,

Thanks for following up.

No, there is no damage.  I was using it at work, put it asleep to go home, and when I woke it up, I had no video or indicator lights.

The LCD BIST worked successfully.  I ran the Pre-boot System Assessment Build 4123 from the boot up options with no errors.  I ran the Full Test Diagnostics from the support page with no errors.  I selectively ran the LCD lid test from the support page to swivel the display and saw no impact on the lcd display, but I never had an option to select anything other than Fail or Cancel.  Note that I had to run the PSA and the support page diagnostics using an external monitor.

I could see no faint display using a flashlight.  Safe mode would only work with an external monitor.

The day the error occurred, I did notice the battery indicator flashing blue for a short period of time, but I could not find an error code for just a blue flashing light.  It eventually went away.

Thanks.

Hi DNZTX,

Thank you for the update.

Force the BIOS flash and check - http://dell.to/2h9shSO

Download the service manual here - http://dell.to/2khRFaH and reseat the LCD cable and check.

If it still does not work, I would suspect the LCD controller might have failed and the motherboard would need to be replaced.

You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ
