Major Problems, please help

I have been having problems with my Inspiron 5150 since a few months after I got it.  It all began with my network connection.  Every now and then when I booted up the computer if it took a fair amount of time to load up, about 2-3 min. the internet (my LAN here at school) would not work.  This would occur about 1 in every 3 start ups.  Soon the problem became worse and it occurred in about 4 in every 5 start ups.  I didn't mind this too much until my computer started to shut down randomly.  Therefore causing me to start it back up 4 - 5 times to get the internet working again, only to have it shut down a little while later.  It seemed to shut itself down when the fan was on high which lead me to believe it was turning off to prevent over heating.  Virus checking and computer games caused the fan to run on high and there for shut down the computer.  I'd run the diagnostics disk many times and every test passes no matter how many times I test, nor what type of tests I run.  For one reason or another the DVD player on my laptop also didn't work (if I remember correctly) but it would however run CDs.  I soon became fed up with the machine and decided I might as well just reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP professional.  I deleted all partitions and began installing XP.  While installing XP the fan began running on high and surprise surprise, presto!  off went my laptop.  I was convinced that it was a hardware problem.  I turned my computer back on multiple times and it began installing XP again, at about the same point though the computers fan went on high and it turned itself off again.  Whether it be luck or cruel fate, the time I called dell and had a dell support women on the phone with me for 45 min. the thing installed correctly.  With very little on the computer I could do little to show her that the machine was still actually broken and that the flook start up was just fate laughing at me.  After reinstalling a few things and having the computer shut down on me a few more times, I called them back again.  This time a lady told me to upgrade my bios.  I was running version A01 and am now running a much higher version (I rather not restart and check, you'll understand why in a min.)  This finally fixed my problem.  The only small side effect was that now my power light didn't turn on except while the battery was charging (no biggie).  Soon I began getting an IRQL not less than or equal too blue screen error caused by bcwl (or something like that).  After calling dell up many times for that, with little help I researched IRQL errors and found that it was my wireless LAN card which was messing up.  So I reinstalled the drivers for that and made sure they were digitally signed.  Occasionally they go bad and cause a very slow start up and cause me to not have wireless signal when I am supposed to, so I simply reinstall them about every other week.  I'm currently on wireless connection 8.  (Goes up one each time I reinstall).  I've had problems with my wireless mouse and problems with my printer being detected but have both of those problems fixed at the time.  Now I have yet another problem.  (Oh yea by the way the computer is less than a year old).  Yesterday while trying to watch pulp fiction DVD on my laptop the movie stopped while playing in WinDVD 4.  I tried playing it in WMP but it didn't work same with real player.  I decided the best thing to do was, as always, restart and try again.  When I restarted the computer went on for approximately 7-10 seconds.  During this time the screen was black and the computer made no noise.  The scroll lock and the Caps lock buttons were illuminated but were not blinking.  After the 10 seconds the computer simply turned off.  I tried about 10-20 more times to turn the computer on to find the same thing happening over and over again.  I was delighted, since I knew that dell would have to take my computer back to the factory and fix it for real this time.  To my surprise the computer started up perfectly fine the next morning.  When I shut it down later that day and tried to turn it back on right afterwards the problem continued.  It seems that I have to give the computer about an hour to rest each time I turn it off or else it may not start back up again.  This has become a major problem while installing programs that require me to restart after installation.   I have yet to call Dell since most conversations with them take hours and resolve nothing, I have ran the diagnostics disk twice for all non-interactive tests and it passes.  I ran anti-virus software and found nothing.  Please help, what is wrong with my machine?  I need it for school.  I also want to add that I am not a computer guru but I am also not a dummy.  I don't know much about hardware but I know my software.  I would please please please appreciate any advice that you would have to offer.  I'm going to include all the specs I can think of at the bottom of this post.  Sorry for the length but I thought I should include all problems and details.   Dell Inspiron 5150  3.06 Ghz Processor  512 megs ram  40 gig hd   PS  I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem, or if it's normal or not by my bulky power supply chirps like a cricket when the computer fan runs on high.  Just thought I'd throw that out there.   Please respond

Try starting it up without AC, so running just on battery. If you still get the problem, try restarting on just AC without a battery in...

I read this on another post " Normally all 3 lights blinking means a processor failure or unseated processor.  numlock and scroll lock flass for motherboard failures, capslock and scroll lock are memory.  I could be off but that's how i remember it."  Is this correct?  Do you think I could have a hard drive problem?  If so, why would it only happen during start up, and only when the computer was running in the last hour?

I've tried starting it with the battery out and it running only on AC, and then also tried running it only on battery power.  Same thing happens.

It wouldn't be a hard-drive that's causing your problems...Do the Numlock/Capslock/Scroll Lock lights flash in a certain pattern on your laptop when you start it up?

They don't flash on start up but the caps lock and the scoll lock keys are always green on when the laptop starts up and then shuts down.  On a normal start up this does not occur.  The num lock key though never goes on during start up.  It is only the caps lock and scroll lock leds.  The computer does not beep, atleast not from the internal speaker (if laptops have those), everytime it was shut down previously though the built in speakers may have been muted so tonight i'm making it a point to make sure they are on.

Thank you, how would you recomend I go about fixing this problem?  Should I call dell and have them take it back and fix it?  (I rather not try myself in fear of voiding my warrenty)  How come this error only occurs at start up and only after the computer has been on in the last hour?

You've got a 0-1-1 lock LED code, which means that you've got a memory problem.  Either the memory chips are bad, or the motherboard slot that holds the chips are bad.  Or you might just need to reseat the memory.

Well,

It is good to know that I am not alone. (I think)

I have an Inspiron 5100.   The problems you are having are the same as mine.   I finally got DELL to replace the DVD/CD drive.   It took me several hours to finally get it through their head that it was a hardware problem.

As for the the wireless problems you are having, I am also having them.  DELL is not help in these matters, because just like you I have to wait a few hours (trun the laptop off and let it rest or cool) then things start working better until its been on for a few hours.

I am going to reformat my drive, if I can get it too stay on for finish the process.

Anyone else thinking of buying an extended warranty - DON"T.  It isn't worth the additional cost, if you have to battle DELL to honor it without giving up several hours or days off your life.

In fact, I recommend looking at other PC manufacturers.  Go for price as customer service is non-existent.

wow i completlty forgot about this post. lol, yea hey, in responce, Dell prob. wouldn't want me say'n this but when I called them up complaining about the over heating, I made such a fuss and told them that they couldn't seel computers that over heated and got clogged with dust that they credited my account 200 dollers.  I said I would have to buy years and years of compressed air to have a sorta 'fix', and said though it's not expensive it is a large inconvience and after hours of complaining and going up and up the chain of customer support they gave it to me.  So it is possible to get money back.

My Dell 5150 has similar problems with heating and the memory failure.  After a couple of hours with Dell support they concluded that my motherboard has a bad memory slot. (I placed the memory in the other side and the computer starts fine now) As far as the heating goes I recommend the compressed air (or if you cheap taking a deep breath and blowing through  the back DON"T DROOL) and updating the BIOS. I was running A01 but it had the comp overheating miserabley.  After first updating to A26 (you have to update to this one using a cd .iso image or a boot disk) because this is the BIOS update that switches from Phoenix to Dell and then to the newest version (now A38) my computer now no longer has these issues.  The readme for this says it has fixed minor thermal issues due to dust and it appears to be working fine.  My computer seems to work fine with the memory in the other slot  and they are replacing my motherboard sometime this week.  It may have been a hassle but now my computer which has the very prone to over heating 3.06 ghz proccessor is running better than it did out of the box.  UPGRADE EVERTHING!:smileyvery-happy: and you will be happy. I'll keep you posted on the motherboard.

I have been reading about the overheating problems with the Dell 5100 and 5150.  I have a 5100 and have only had it for about 4 months and I think mine is starting to overheat as well.  Should I call Dell and try to get it fixed ASAP?  It will just shut off by itself...especially if I'm doing a virus scan.  Will defraging the comp. help?  Anyone who knows...PLEASE write back.  I'm a college student and I would be very upset if I lost any of my work.  Thanks!

Call up dell and tell them you have too much dust in ur system and you need your "fans replaced and thermal gel"  or sumtin of that nature.  If she asks you how do you know, just say something smart sounding (the lvl 1 technies won't know what ur talk'n about and assume ur right and just write up the standard "clean out the guts" form)  Just say you've been monitering the temps and there too high, u've upgradd to a higher bios and it doesn't help.  They will clean out all the dust and replace the components which would have dust on it.  When you get it back, spend 5 bucks on a can of compressed air and blow out ur system once a week.  Just blow in the vent in the back, not from the bottom.  You are have'n the exact same probs my 5150 has.  I got so fed up i just tried reinstalling everything but it would freeze before reinstalling windows lol.  but yea that's the fix, dell hasn't announced that it is doing a recall but if u complain enough (about 45 min.) and are good at it (like i was) they can credit ur account (like they did mine $200) not too shabby, but definitly not a good fix.

This overheating is a well-known (to everyone but the "tech support" that Dell outsources to!) DESIGN FLAW that causes overheating and sudden loss of power. They fix it but putting in a redesigned heat exchanger/fan.

I got my 5150 hardware all fixed up for FREE, out of warranty, because I could show the problem started in warranty. But I had to be very determined to get this. Just research 5100 or 5150 AND fan, overheat, power loss, or any of your other symptoms and see how many posts come up! There is a special supervisor customer service branch (sounded like in US) that deals with this problem.

But now, my software is all corrupted (from the sudden power losses) and I will have to start all over reloading everything on my system!

Best of luck to all.
