Maximum RAM
I have a Dell Inspiron N7110 i7 with 8GB RAM, 1Tb HDD, full keyboard etc. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I see that the limitation on RAM is 16GB with Home Premium, yet it seems as though the laptop hardware only supports a maximum of 8GB RAM (2x4GB Modules)? Is this true? If so, would upgrading my OS to Ultimate allow me to add more RAM. I want to put in 2x8GB RAM modules to give me 16 GB.

Thank you for your reply. Have you (or anyone you know) put in more than 8GB? I must say, I find it strange to believe that Dell would limit that. I mean, it's 1333MHz DDR3 Ram Modules.

Hi DirkStrauss,
Welcome to the Community,
Maximum memory supported on Inspiron N7110 is 8 GB.Upgrading OS does not allow you to add more memory.
The Inspiron™ N7110 / 17R system supports dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM with memory speeds of 1333 MHz. At 1333 MHz, the memory offers a significant increase of memory performance over previous platforms.
The memory solution is implemented in a dual-channel configuration, allowing the system to have twice the memory bandwidth while using the same memory technology.
Memory modules must be installed as a perfectly matched pair to take advantage of the dual-channel memory bus. If not a matched pair, the system's memory bus operates in a single-channel configuration.
Memory Configuration
Basically, when both DIMM connectors are populated, the system has optimum dual-channel performance unless channels A and B have different amounts of memory.

Hope this helps,

Official hardware support is 2X4 = 8G. Going beyond that may or may not work - your current OS supports it but the hardware doesn't - at least not officially.

Must the 2 x 4GB RAM Modules be the same make? Can I put in 1 extra 4GB Kingston Module with the existing 4GB Samsung module?

They don't have to be the same make but they should be identical in spec (speed/latency/etc.).
