Memory upgrade for Inspiron E1705
I want ot upgrade my memory to 4 GIG. Currently my two slots are occupied by two 1 Gig modules giving me 2 GIGs of RAM. I just read that 2 GIG is the max for my system. Is this correct? Is this just a "recommendation" or a system limitation? Has anyone out there heard of anyone trying 4 GIG upgrade?
I run Auto CAD 2009 and mutiple windows/software programs continuously.
Thanks

The max memory is 4gb,as you can see in my sig.you need 2 x 2gb modules.Either a kit with 2 x 2gb modules or 2 of the exact same modules so you will keep dual channel mode.I upgraded to 4gb almost a year and a half ago.

Thank you dgkpcong. I wnet online with Dell chat and went ahead and got it, just as you describe (2-2GIG). Did you see a big jump in performance from 2 GIG to 4 GIG? BTW, that is quite a system you have.

I have the same laptop and can only find upgrades to 2GB which I already have. So Dell has the 4GB ( 2-2GB) for the E1705?

Guys check out http://www.crucial.com/ here you can put in your model of the PC you have it will tell you everything you need to know. They also have great prices on memory. We purchase memory from these people and they are really good.

Have done so and it and Dell show only a 2GB (2-1GB) upgrade. No 4GB. Also they show it as a 200 pin memory module and I searched on the GEIL memory and it states theres is a 240 pin module?

trucco,
When these systems(E1705) were made they were only tested with 2gb that is why every site has it listed as 2gb max.Dell had it listed at 4gb max about a year ago and took it back to 2gb max, don't know why?....

MLaRocca,
Sorry i did not get back sooner,i have been busy with my system exchange on my E1705 for the Studio 1737.My GPU and MOBO died too many times and this was dells dicission. But not much of a jump, more pages open at a time and quicker loads,reads/write times.I hate to have to give up my Go 7900GS for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650,but,have no choice.I went from Sonoma Merom to Montevina Penryn,so,not too bad.I guess.
The 7900GS is still calling my name though:emotion-6:

Hello Trucco.
I agree with Irish2009, crucual is a great site and tool. I scanned my laptop with it and got the same information you did. I use it for the older computers at work, to gather reliable memory info and specifics for those memory adds/upgrades.
I called Dell and the tech indicated that they have been upgrading the memory to 4 gig for about year, this was confirmed by dgkpcon in his ealier post and when I asked him, he indicated that his performance increased. Check his post for exact wording. I purchased the upgrade and could let you know how that goes in about 4 days.

As stated before I did check with Crucial and they only show 2GB upgrade. I was on Dell's sales chat also yesterday afternoon with "Meraldo" for 30 minutes while she checked and she stated that 2 GB was the limit. Even showed her the post of MLaRocca stating that 4GB was just purchased through the sales chat also. I would be real interested in what Dell had sold him for the 4GB upgrade.

trucco,
I purchased mine off ebay when i did the upgarade(year-year and a half) as this was the only place with a low price.Everyone else(majority) were selling for $299.00-$400.00) at that time.Memory has since come down in price though.
