Memory upgrade

Running WIN7/64 on an Inspiron 1720. Tried to upgrade memory but system will not boot with 8GB, will boot with 6GB. Checked for BIOS update, came up empty. Any suggestions.

Official support: 4G RAM.  It's amazing it even booted with 4+2 -- but there's no way it'll work with 4+4.  The chipset and mainboard are too old in design.

Hi retiredcowboy,

You said that you have WIN7/64 and Inspiron 1720. Inspiron 1720 supports a maximum of 8GB So it should work with 8 GB. As BIOS update has already been done. I would request you to try these steps

1) Try each 4 GB module individually

2) Try First 4 GB + 2GB modules and try the same combo with a different 4GB module and See if it is working.

As other memory modules are working in both slots the motherboard is fine. It might be an issue with Memory modules only .

Please let me know of the results and also post if you have any other questions.

This model supports 4G max, not 8.

Ok, ran every possible combo of memory using both slots.

May results where such: 2x2 3.99GB, 2x4 5.99 GB, 4x4 would not boot

up. All 2x4 combos where the same as was the 4x4 combos. Re-flashed

BIOS no help. Suggestions. . . (been busy and just got back to

issue)
