Mouse arrow moves erratically on it's own
Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude C600 laptop with dual boot to NT and ME operating systems. Since last few days my mouse is behaving erraticially and moves on its own and doesn't let me use the laptop. This has started whether I boot in NT or ME.
I tried downloading Synaptics touchpad driver from Dell website and installed it. It didn't work so I tried generic driver from Synaptic website and that too didn't work. I also tried reinstalling the latest BIOS. Nothing worked.
Can you please help me?
Regards,
Mukesh Kumar

Mukesh,
I wanted to respond to your posting as I have had extensive experience with the issue you've described. I was working for a company 2 years ago when the C600 and C610 models came out. We had at least a dozen of each model of computer circulating around our company. When I first encountered the occurrence of the "floating cursor", I spoke with the technicians at Dell and they concluded that it was the palmrest that was causing the problem. After replacing the palmrest (multiple times on each of the two models), the "floating cursor" continued to show up. Dell decided to re-evaluate the problem at this point and came to the conclusion that it was not in fact the palmrest that was creating the issue, but the motherboard for the computers instead. The motherboard was replaced on each of the computers we had at our company and the mysterious "floating cursor" stopped haunting our employees.
My suggestion.....get the motherboard in your computer replaced. You could go the route of having the palmrest replaced, but the liklihood is that you'll have to have that done time and again. On the other hand, replacing the motherboard solved the issue in 99% of the cases we had.
Good luck...

Having dealt with this on many Dells now, I have found the problem to usually be physical not electronic. First, try a good cleaning. The most common culprit has been loose case screws holding the palmrest. Tighten it all up and see if that helps. Also, if the system was taken apart ever, make sure that the screws were all replaced correctly. Some of the screws are slightly longer and if you get one of the long ones in the front then there is no way to tighten the palmrest down all the way. (I've seen this a few times. Especially on laptops of my power users. You know the guy who runs with the case off his desktop system and has a stack of hard drives and memory sticks just sitting on his desk.)
Finally, open up the system and check all the mountings. Make sure nothing is broken or loose. Similar problems have caused erratic sound including static or scratching when the system is moved.
Hope it helps,
