Multiple entries for hardware
Re: Inspiron 8000..
Thru the My Computer 'door' or thru Settings, Add/Remove Hardware 'door,' I've discovered duplicate copies of several hardware items:
5 entries for 'System board'
4 entries for 'Default monitor'
2 entries for 'Texas Instruments PCI-4451 CardBus Controller'
I hesitated to remove the duplicates on my own, so I called Tech Support. After investigation, the tech had me 'uninstall' 4 of the 5 'System board' entries accessed via 'My Computer,' then reboot. As it was rebooting, he told me to use the same procedure to delete the other duplicates. After rebooting, the duplicates were still there, and I passed that along. At that time, the phone connection was broken.
My question: How do I remove these duplicates? Should some sort of checking be done beforehand?
Thanks.

Usually, to remove duplicates, you would delete all of the entries (rather than leaving one as you were instructed), and then re-boot, so that the hardware can be re-detected.
However, sometimes it isn't a big deal to have multiple entries... I'm not on my home computer right now, so I can't check my device manager, but people have definitely reported multiple entries for default monitor before, and it's not a cause for concern.
Do you have any conflicts listed in the device manager (exclamation points)? If not, I wouldn't worry about the duplicate entries.

I have 3 entries for "Default Monitor", and 5 entries for "System Board". I also have 2 entries for PCMCIA adapters, but since there are 2 PCMCIA slots, I don't think that's an actual duplicate entry. So, I don't think there's anything to be concerned about.
Hope that helps!
