My Screen keeps going black

I have a problem with my computer screen. Every time that someone has the computer on, the screen will stay on for about 10 seconds and then it goes black. If you shut the lid completely, it will come back on and then go back out in a couple of seconds. I was wondering if anybody knew how to fix this?

Hi,

What model are we talking about ? Have you tried an external monitor ?

i'm having a similar problem.  i have a brand spankin new inspiron 5160 with the sxga screen and the nvidia geforce fx go5200 with 32mb ram.  just after logon the screen goes black for about half a second.  very strange.  i wiped the default xp home and installed xp pro.  i'm pretty sure it didn't do it with the default xp home install but then i wasn't logging in - passwords weren't enabled and so it just started up with the default user.
