N5110 - No power
i have a Dell Inspiron N5110 that is aroud 15 months old.
Iit had no problem up till last night. Now when i press the power button nothing happens. I plugged the Charger and still no difference , no lights at the front of the laptop or anywhere else... it looks completely dead . I have taken out the battery and tried turning it on with only AC but it didn't work either ,
There is a blue light at the tip of the charger that plugs in to the back of the laptop, so I assume the AC power block is working.
One more curious thing I found. If I plug a USB stick in to the port next to the left of the power button, the light on the USB stick will flash every time I press the power button.
Any idea of what part(s) I need to replace??

Hi rickardsev,
Try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:
If the issue still persist, the first part recommend to replace it the DC-in port where you connect the charger on the laptop and then the motherboard. If the system is under warranty, please share the system's Service Tag and Owner's/Company's Name with me via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation).
If the system is not under warranty you may contact Dell's Out of Warranty Repairs team at 1-800-288-4410 (Applicable for US customers). If you are in a different region, go to http://dell.to/18NmI2D select the country/region from the top, scroll down and click on 'Contact Dell Sales' to get the contact information.
Please reply if you have any questions.

Tried the 30 second power button, still not working.
The laptop only had a 1 year warranty that has run out. I t would be helpful to know based on the symptoms what I need to replace, the power board or the motherboard. I would hate to buy one to find out the other was the broken part.
The only indication of any power is a usb flash drive will light for a second if I press the laptop on switch.

Hi rickardsev,
Based on the description it appears either DC-in port or motherboard may need replacement. DC-in port is a low cost commodity and that is why I recommended you to replace it first. If the issue still persist, then you may consider replacing the motherboard. The part number for the DC-in port is PFYC8. Try to wiggle the AC Adapter cable from the point where it connects on the system to check if it makes a difference, possible the port can be loose as well.
If you wish you may get it checked by a local technician to isolate the point of failure. Please reply if you have any questions.

An update, I took the laptop apart, removed the hard drive, cmos battery, memory, dvd-drive etc and then put everything back togeather. Plugged the power cord in and it booted up (note, I didn't even press the power button, it turned on just by putting the power cord in the laptop). I then left it on for 6 days non stop, everything was working as normal. Yesterday I used hibernate for the first time, now it will not power on again, exactly the same as the original symptoms.
Any idea whats going on here, the fact it ran for 24hr non stop for 6 days leads me to reason the motherboard, memory and cpu is fine.

Hi rickardsev,
If you remove and reseat the CMOS battery and plug the power cable to the system, it will turn on itself. This is a normal process. At present, try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:
If the issue persists, please remove the hard drive from the system and power it on. See if you are able to power on the system or not. Also, try and wiggle the AC Adapter to check if the port is loose or not.
Please reply with the results.

Removed the hard drive, still would not turn on(the blue light on the charger stays lit when connected to the back of the laptop).
I also fitted a new vga/power board today, again it made no difference. This is truly bizarre.
Would a working motherboard still power on with a fauly cpu and make a series of error beeps, or just not power on at all?.

Hi rickardsev,
Thank you for sharing the information. If the system is still not powering on after replacing the vga/power board then it appears to be an issue with the motherboard and I would suggest you to replace it.
Ideally, the system would not complete POST and emit series of beep codes if the motherboard is fine and the processor is faulty. In your case, the system is not powering on at all. All I can suspect is either the power button is faulty or the motherboard has failed.
Please reply if you have any questions.

Forget to say, I have already bought a new motherboard (part no OG8RW1) and it made no difference.
The only other part I can think of now is the I/O Board that the mohterboard connects to.
Would a working motherboard connected with memory, cpu etc, still power on without the IO board attached?

Hi rickardsev,
Yes, you are right that now the only point of failure is the I/O board, you try replacing it and check functionality. Also, a working motherboard would not power on without the I/O board attached.
Please reply if you have any questions, I'll be happy to assist you further.
