Need help identifying supported RAM by Chipset &/or Processor combo

Hi,

Can someone help me understand? Here is a for instance.

When I look @ a Latitude E6500 the supported RAM is 667 or 800 MHz depending on the chipset &/or Processor combination. According to the Crucial website this PC will not handle more than PC2-6400 @ 800MHz. My question is:

The chipset is Intel 45 Express. There's quite often an asterix in the user's manual indicating:

Memory type

DDR II 667 MHz and 800 MHz (if supported by
  chipset and/or processor combinations)

How do I know what RAM this chipset (Intel 45 Express) & this processor (T9600) combo will support? Other than using the Crucial website to look it up. I must be missing something simple.

More - how do I know if it's GM45 vs. PM45? The PM45 will support DDR3 @ 1067MHz. Obviously not this PC even though it has a FSB @ 1067 MHz.  Does that mean this PC has a GM45 chipset?

When I look up the configuration using the service tag there is never any information on the motherboard?

thanks

Hi,

Welcome to dell community.

Latitude E6500 supports memory upto 8 GB ( 4 Gb x 2) 800 Mhz.  You can install the memory with 800 Mhz clock speed. it's compatible with latitude E6500.

If you have any questions please reply back to the same post.

Hi,

Yes - thank you but I guess my question wasn't really specific to this PC.  On the Dell community forum I will once in a while see a post where someone will say this chipset (whatever chipset, not this specific one) will only support RAM @ such & such speed.

Like say for instance someone wants to know why they can't put RAM running @ 1066MHz because that is the speed on the FSB & a responding poster will say that chipset does not support anything more than 800Mhz.  When I try to find out what chipset the User Guide only lists something generic like Intel 45 Express. The GM45 & PM45 Intel chipset  support different speeds.

How are they determining what chipset is on the PC?  I cannot find it using the service tag in the product support section on  the Dell website nor can I get more than just the generic Intel 45 Express in the User Guide.  Shouldn't there be more specific info somewhere, so I can tell exactly what chipset is in the PC?

Sorry, don't feel like I'm doing a very good job of explaining exactly what I'm asking.

thanks

edit:  trying to research a  PC not in my possession.
