amigaherbie,

You will probabley need to look over the Microsoft website to find out if the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse can be used without the USB Dongle.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

I have emailled both Dell and Microsoft support over this for the last 2 weeks.  The Dell support emails keep saying it's Microsoft's problem and the Microsoft emails say it's Dell's problem.  I ended up returning my BT mouse last week because no one wanted to claim responsibility for it not working.  I'm glad to see that Dell finally did release a new driver and that some people are getting it to work.  Now I'm beginning to wish I didn't return the mouse.

Just thought I'd pipe up here and let you know that I just installed the BT driver for my Latitude D800. I had previously installed the drivers for the MS BT mouse and was forced to use their transceiver rather than the built-in BT that came with my laptop. I'm happy to report that after upgrading to the new Dell driver the mouse works beautifully .

kerford,

How did you get it to work?

On my D800, I downloaded and installed the latest WIDCOMM BT drivers from Dell's Website.  I uninstalled the Microsoft Intellimouse Software and rebooted.

I was able to to see the mouse in "My Bluetooth Places" and setup a pairing (although I had to leave the PIN code blank to get it to pair.  When I tried to "connect" it put a green double arrow over the mouse, which then disappeared.  The bottom line is the mouse is not working.

The I reinstalled the Intellimouse software which then as usual asked for the transceiver to be plugged in.

I sure hope you have some details about what you did to get it working (are you running XP Pro?)

Thanks,

Scott

scottleslie,

You shouldn't have to actually pair the devices (at least not like a phone, with passwords).  This is the way I set up the connection:

  1. double-click the bluetooth icon in the system tray to open the "My Bluetooth Places" window
  2. click "Bluetooth Setup Wizard"
  3. Select "I know the service I want to use..." (default) and click Next
  4. pick "Human Interface Device", click Next
  5. push the button on the button of the mouse to make it Discoverable
  6. "Microsoft Mouse" should appear in the device list, select it and click Next (if not, repeat 5 and hit Search Again)
  7. click Finish and that should be it

I like design of this mouse and its relatively good transmit rate (I measured it at 90Hz), but I don't like how it never quite shuts off.  It continues to flash periodically even when left idle on an opaque surface, thus draining the batteries even when not in use.  When I toss it in my backpack, its movement in the pack causes it to "come alive" continuously.  There should have been a switch to turn the thing off.  The alkalines that it came with lasted me only two weeks of light usage. I've switched to 2000mAH NIMH batteries now, hopefully these will last longer than that between charges.

Kaiju,

I did just as you said, when I'm all done, I get no response from the mouse.

The process proceeds as you said it would.  When I go to My Bluetooth Places, I see the mouse icon labeled "Microsoft Mouse".  A small horizontal green double arrow appears for a few seconds over the mouse icon and then disappears.  But I never get any response from mouse clicks or motions.  Does this green arrow appear in your setup?

I uninstalled the Intellimouse 4.9 software that came with the mouse and rebooted thinkg that this was interfering with the Bluetooth communcation.  Still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Scott

scottleslie,

After the search and the "Microsoft Mouse" icon appears in the list, I click Next (step 6 in above) and the double green arrows show up for a second over its icon in "My Bluetooth Places" and then disappears, the mouse is not yet active.  Then once I click Finish, the green arrows appear again and stay on, at that point, the mouse is functioning.  Afterwards, the re-connection is automatic whenever the mouse is in range and is moved.

Have you verified the mouse is working with the USB dongle?  Any other bluetooth devices available for you to try a test connection with the D800?  Maybe other sources of nearby radio interference?  Once I thought there might be some interference between the BT and WiFi transceivers, but have found that they get along quite well simultaneously active.  On the other hand, copying a large file across WiFi definitely degrades the voice quality of my 2.4GHz cordless phone.  My first experience with bluetooth was trying to pair an Ericsson T39 phone with an Toshiba PocketPC, spent several days before deciding one of the units might be defective, so I got a replacement T39 and it paired and connected on first try.  The fact the mouse shows up after the search makes me think the hardware is okay, however.  I never installed the Intellimouse software on my D800, I thought it might interfere with the touchpad, so I don't know if that could have a side effect.  Not sure of what else to try next ;-(

It works just fine on my Inspiron 8500 with the new BT Drivers...

I had to read all these posts to really believe it... I then reinstalled the software updater from Dell twice!! to get it to work, but when it does, it works!!!

Tips:

-No need for Intellimouse software. Uninstall it and reboot if needed

-If you install the Bluetooth updated drivers and Windows doe NOT tell you it is installing new hardware, you are no good... you must try it again.

-After new hardware is installed and recognized, follow the instructions above from Kanjui and make sure Windows says it is installing new software for your device after CONNECTING to the newly found HID (the mouse)

As soon as it begins the mouse comes alive! It definitely works just fine... finally no more wires for a mouse from my laptop. I can now use the cradle/dongle on my desktop and move the mouse betweek [it] and my laptop... very cool!

Thanks for all the hints in this thread to make me try harder...
