New Dell Support Center - Receive Error Code 1306

I have been trying to download the new Dell Support Center and keep receiving error code 1306 - another application has exclusive access to a particular file.  It suggests I shut down all other applications and then retry.  However, nothing is open, and I can get nowhere with the download.  Any suggestions?  Has anyone run into this problem?

I recently tried installing the new application too and I'm having the same problem. Is anyone at Dell looking into the problem or do I need to live with the problem forever? I've tried to upload the screenshot to this forum, but I was unsuccessful.

Same problem here.  Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop purchased 2008 running Win XP.

Dell needs to step up to the plate ASAP on this.

All depends on how Dell Support notices/responds to this thread, I would say.

I am having the same problem.  I am getting the same error message on my PC Dell Dual Core when I try to install the new update for the Dell Support Center.

December 13th, 2010 08:00

I had the same 1306 error with my Dell XP desktop after trying to update DELL SUPPORT CENTER.

The fix that worked for me:

At startup (desktop), do not run the AULAUNCHER program that pops up.  Select "cancel"

Hit  the Windows Start button (on bottom task bar)

Select Run

enter msconfig

go to Services tabdeselect the Supportsoft line

go to Startup tab, deselect all lines that reference Dell Support Center (I believe I had 3 lines)

Click "apply" at bottom of window.  System will reboot and Support Center should not load at Startup.

After the system boots, verify that sprtemd.exe is not running (using Task Manager-processes tab; this file should not be listed).

Now run the AULAUNCHER.EXE program that had been previously downloaded from Dell.  The new version of Support Center should  install normally.

After the new version was installed, I then went back to msconfig, and re-selected the items that I had turned off on the Services and Startup tabs.

Thanks, Flyfish.  Your tip was helpful, but I still had 'problems'.  First thing, under MSCONFIG/Startup I noticed a couple of things that looked very odd.  Two items were listed named (square, square) and (square x 8) .. meaning the actual names were TWO SQUARES and EIGHT SQUARES .. or special characters that I cannot type here .. (hope this makes sense).  I ignored it and followed your suggestions.  AULAUNCHER downloaded the new support cernter and install began, .. first uninstalling the OLD support center then installing the new.  On first boot, got error SQUARE, SQUARE could not be found, then SQUARE x 8 could not be found, but everything looked OK except for that.

Went to registry, and found the reference to SQUARE x 2 and SQUARE x 8.  They were being called from my Brother Printer section.  I deleted the keys to load and run these two files.  Rebooted, and all SEEMS OK, but the new Support Center does not run on boot, .. runs OK when I click it from Start Menu.  I suppose I could put it in Start UP .. but am wondering if something is wrong.  I can't be sure, . but I got the same warnings about these two files the FIRST TIME I tried to upgrad Control Center .. could not figure out what to do, so I did a SYSTEM RESTORE and everything SEEMED OK, but I had NO problems before first attempt of upgrading Service Center.

I dunno, .. pretty confusing .. mystery files/registry entries . boot errors .. all since first trying the upgrade (before your tip).

I am not sure if your registry errors are related, since you indicate that they may be tied to your Brother Printer.

After updating to the new Dell Support Center (both on my XP desktop and my Vista laptop),  I did note that a Dell Support Icon was not longer on the task bar (lower right near the time).   The XP machine was fixed by posted method, whereas my Vista machine installed the update without any need for a tweek.  Hence the missing icon may be normal.

Both my Dells will load the Support Center via "Start/All Programs/Dell Support Center/Dell Support Center.  A new icon is displaced using that method.

Based on your comments, I did go to the msconfig - Startup tab and verified that Support center was in fact loaded at startup.  However, on the XP machine, I noted that SupportSoft Sprocket Service (Dell Support Center) was flagged as "stopped, under the Services tab.   I then went to Administrative Tools - Services; there SupportSoft was set to "automatic".   I am not sure if this is normal, or not.

On my Vista machine (that loaded the Dell Support Update normally), I see no reference to Dell Support under msconfig - services.  Under msconfig - startup, the Dell Support is listed under a company name of Gteko.

I am not sure if my proposed fix is the cause of the difference between the XP and Vista machines.

On both machines, Dell Suppor Center appears to be runnng in the background; I guess I will not know for sure if everythig is working correctly, until the periodic "PC Checkup" automatically kicks in (on the preset time interval; currently 31 days).

Like everyone else, I fell for the first notification and tried to install it.  I THINK that is where the mysterious file name events happened.  Truthfully, I can't remember everything that happened .. I tried installing twice .. both disasters.  I got the boot error that those files could not be found both times .. the first time right after the first attempt.  THEN, I did a system restore .. assuming all was 'back to normal'.  No problems .. until I tried your suggestions .. and on the first reboot, got those file not found errors again.  No other problems though.  I deleted the call to those files in the registry .. and that is where I am now ... all seems OK.

No Dell Support Center icon on the task bar (over by the clock).  I don't see anything in Task Manager/Processes either.  I don't see anything in MSCONFIG, STARTUP either.  Like you, will wait to see what happens on a scheduled PC CHECKUP .. though I have a feeling it is not running.

Windows XP 32 bit.  Went to Add/Remove programs, removed the old support center, then had no 1306 or any other errors loading the new s/w.

Thank you!  Removing the program first and then just reinstalling did the trick!
