No Sound in mpg file

I have just bought a Vostro 1700 with Windows XP. I have been trying to use the Roxio software supplied to produce a DVD using mpg files imported from my camcorder.

1) If you import a file into Roxio you get a message saying AC3 audio not supported refer to home page for an update. Cannot find update info. Roxio site not much help either.

2) Using Windows Media just to play the file - only get vision no sound. sound ok on other file types, CDs and DVDs. The same file plays OK using Windows Media Player on my desktop also under Windows XP. Desktop is 3 years older. Isn't progress great??

My desktop at work can't play it all but then it is pretty old.

Anybody else had this kind of problem?

I'm not familiar with the specifics of the AC3 file type, but I read somewhere that the 'classic' version of Windows Media Player can play it, which makes me think that newer versions don't. Try googling the file type.
