I have the same problem with my Inspiron 6400 (E1505) (German layout). The original battery typ "GD761" (53 Wh) is ok, but my additional 2 batteries typ "KD476" (85 Wh) are both dead: When I press the "charge button" there come no lights; WinXp says the batteries are dead and the battery LED on the laptop is flashing red... Both batteries were bought in 2006/2007.
On the Dell-website I couldn't found any solutions for this problem; so here is the question of the day:

Who can help?
I have had the same problem. In fact my Inspiron cuts off wil working on it. When you call dell support they tell you to buy another battery.
Hey there, SOunds to me at first glance like your laptop isn't charging your batteries. I've had this issue a few times, and Dell can be hard to deal with.
First thing you should know is that your battery is under warranty for 1 year only. So if it's still under warranty, you need to demand a replacement, two non-functional batteries should help prove that the issue is not the batteries.
Secondly, when you call Dell, there's a mentatlity that the problem is yours, and they can't help you so either buy a new part, or a new laptop. You need to push them to listen to you. It doesn't help to yell/swear/insult the techs, but they are graded on length of calls, not customer satisfaction, so keeping on the phone a long time (more than an hour) can help. I also find calling the french line sometimes helps me avoid dell inda.
Thirdly, you should keep detailed records of every call you have, whether it's negative or positive. I would actually suggest going to radio shack or circuit city and picking up a device to be able to record your conversations. Dell will often argue what was said during a conversation to their benefit. It is legal to record phone coversations in Canada, in the US both parties need to be informed, but there is usually a recorded message saying that this message may be recorded etc ...
One more thing, if you get offered a callback, you need a precise day, time, TIME ZONE!, and CALLBACK NUMBER. Dell has a funny habit of calling the office at 2am, and my house at 2pm. Make sure to specify what number to call, when, and that needs to be recorded.
It doesn't sounds like a battery issue to me, if you already have two batteries that aren't working. If you have one that isn't working, it should still carry a charge for at least 2 years. I'm telling you this with 12 years of IT experience, and I hope that you get Dell to listen to you.
Momentarily pressing the battery button shows the battery charge. Yours is DEAD if no lights show. Battery condition is shown when the button is held for a few seconds. You need to be fully charged to determine condition. The battery is either dead, or is not charging. If you know someone with the same battery, borrow it to see if your computer will charge it. If the computer runs but a battery can not be charged, the system board is probably bad.
What battery wire do you mean? There should be no wires on the battery.
I see Dell has some recalls on batteries. Check this site and see if yours is one of them. I think the Inspiron 1505 is listed, but whether the battery is will be another question.
I have problems with a Dell 1501 battery. I have hardly ever used the battery since I am always plugged in. I noticed the battery light flashing green then orange today and when I check the charge it says 98%, but it usually is always at 100%. Battery is not hot to the touch so I will have to run diagnostics on the machine to check it out. If I pull the plug the computer shuts off, it does not switch to battery even though it says 98% charged.
Of course, I am about 6 months beyond the warranty period. Wouldn't you know.
I had the exact same problem: The battery showed power, but the computer just don't seem to rely on it when the AC adapter is unpluged.
Worst, I reinstalled Window recently and the battery is simply no longer recognized. I figured that it might be a driver problem, as it worked before the reinstallation... is there anyone that can tell me how to proceed?
