Run an extended (NOT just quick) hard drive diagnostic - F12 at powerup, Dell diagnostics.  Let the quick test run, and then boot to the 32-bit diagnostics and run the extended test.  Assuming the drive passes, then see:

I have this exact same problem.  My lap top never does this scan tho..  it just sits there unless I cancel the scan.  I got my Studio in spring 2009 and upgraded to Windows 7 a month or 2 ago.  I called Dell Support, but you can barely understand those people.  The guy had me check the hardware and everything passed.  Then he wanted me to do a recovery ad reinstall everything.  I wasnt sure I wanted this route, so I told him I'd backup on my external drive.

I just got done trying to backup, but a number of my files were not backed up cuz they're corrupted.  This sounds bad.

I ran test as you said but when the diagnostic was completed, the same thing happened at boot up. Please advise on further action to take.

So if the diagnostics passed, then you are looking at a file system corruption and will want to find the operating system media or try using any of the recovery options you have (information on drive may be lost)

or if the diagnostics failed.. you want to check your warranty, if in warranty contact dell, if out of warranty decide how you want to replace the failed part and continue from there.
